Changes to 82

Can anyone inform me of any major changes which have been made to the design etc of the 82 since it was introduced in 1992?

There was the DIY mod (sanctioned by NA) to the cable clips to the volume and balance controls. And I guess the logic was changed to allow step by step input selection from the remote control.
Don't know of any others. Have you checked the product history on the web site?

Both the 82 and 52 have gone through some upgrades over the years. Naim is quiet about this though. I'm not sure of the reason, but I must have something to do with product marketing. If you call them you can get specifics on what was done, why, and what the effect is.
Even the major changes to things like the old style and new style 250's are not readily forthcoming. IIRC there are at least 3 distinct versions of the old style 250. I've seen photos with differing output transistors, different caps, and possibly different circuit boards.
I've had both my older 52's (5+ yrs) upgraded by NANA and I did notice an improvement, all be it a small one. A more significant reason was the motorized pots and IR receiver now work better. NANA and Naim UK seemed to have differing views on whether the upgrade was of merit(soundwise).
It would be nice to sort this out and have it as available information somewhere though, like Mike Sae's product history web page.

Thanks Arthur and Clive
I may send Naim UK an email to find out the details. I will post whatever I am told.

J.N. recently traded in his early 82, and the dealer reckoned it sounded noticeably different to a new 82.
Brasher, I guess.

I have just been emailed the following information from another member of the Forum. I am sure that he won't mind me making it more public.
Quote "Since 1992, there have been at least 3 upgrades/improvements to the 82. These
are to the logic board, leads board and pots board, which cost £83, £154 and
£137 respectively, plus labour at £60, all plus VAT. I had found this out
from Naim when I was hunting for one. Even without any of these, the 82 will
be a stunning pre-amp. It's just that your flashy Flash will not work unless
you have had some (or all, not sure) of these things done."

The flashy Flash requires a later revision of the PIC (IIRC thats what its called) to function correctly. Without this all works except the input up/down function.

Got the following information from Naim regarding the 82 (also CDX) question.
The CDX has not changed and we have no immediate plans to.
The Nac 82 has had a few minor changes, but the only one that makes any
significant difference
is changing the Pot board, which costs about £150.00 inc vat.
As with most our equipment we always try to make any improvements
retrofittable.
