Plants online?

Can anyone recommend a decent online retailer of garden plants?

Cheers

Yes I did google but mostly seems very limited.

I understand 'blooms online' are pretty good - no personal experience though.

There are two ways of buying plants, you can buy nearly everything from a local garden center. The choice will be fairly wide but the prices will be high and the quality will be patchy.

If you buy from a specialist nursery, you will have an excellent choice within a limited market.

For instance, I bought a very rare Magnolia tree, which as far as I know, is the only one in Swindon. I went to a specialist Magnolia grower and had a terrific choice in Magnolias at a relatively good price. The local garden centres only sold some tatty looking shrubs and I wanted a tree with a trunk etc.

So decide what you want and do a google search for the plant you want. You can also find specialists in the back pages of gardening magazines.

Regards

The only online retailer I would recommend is

http://www.crocus.co.uk/

Top quality plants and delivered in secure boxes.

Gary,
depending on what you are actully looking for, there are several suppliers on the market, most of the major seed suppliers also do "on line" plants, but generally these are bedding or small perennials. If you want large specimen type plants, as Mick states you will have to go to a specalist supplier[ but please dont buy something because it's the only one in your area,as that could be because your soil type/ location does not suit that particular plant].Try looking up this Company:- www.architecturalplants.com who I would "VERY HIGHLY" recommend [ they have plants that even Mick couldn't afford]and well worth a visit even from Hampshire give them a ring and have a chat their advice is both freely given and free for the asking, they will also not sell you plants that are inappropriat for your area and conditions, ask for Hamish at Nuthurst or Christine at chichester.
or www.pantiles-nurseries.co.uk is also worth a visit.
BOTH of these cater for the amateur and professional gardeners
Two others I havent used myself but have good reputations
www.mulu.co.uk or www.urbanjungle.uk.com
best of luck and good gardening
Please remember though, don't just go for the only one in your area, or else you may just end up with the deadest one in your area as well Winker

It depends on what plants you want in your garden, but I'm a bit late saying this as Mick and Oldie have already done so.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask, as I know everything about plants.

Gary - take some time and visit Hilliers Arboretum and garden centre at Ampfield - just south of Winchester and between Cnandlers Ford and Romsey - you may get some good inspiration

and I have heard that the Architectural Plants place just south of Chichester is a great place to visit

Here's another one for you, particularly useful if you're looking for something a bit exotic. Their prices are competitive and the stock is generally very good - I've purchased several things from them. An interesting place to visit actually if you're in the area http://www.thepalmcentre.co.uk/

Derek,
It's not the nursery South of Chichester[ this one is where all of the plants are propagated/grown on]that you need to visit. It's the main [headquarters for want of a better discription] Nursery at Nuthurst [if you are travelling, there is a very good Pub/food just 100yd's up the road called the Black Horse]the whole place is done in the style of Malaysia /Singapore with colonial style buildings set in a jungle type landscape, a brilliant example of sympathic planting. In fact it's worth going just to visit the lav's
One word of advice though[ given to me by one of my Landscape Archictect friends, on my first visit] "don't take your wallet or credit cards with you, as you will leave a very much poorer man", and it's advice I can reiterate from personal experance, many, many times.Architectural Plants is located just off the A24 on the A272, North of Worthing and to the West of Hayward's Heath,if you don't do anything else, just send for their Catalogue, as they say on the adverts "You Deserve it "
Good Gardening, all,

Oldie - Thanks for the pointer - I mentioned the nursery (which is also a showplace as well) as my wife had visited it recently with a friend who was in a major buying phase and she was most impressed with what she saw

Yes,
unfortunatly I have also been there, quite a few times as well, but if your Wife and Friend found Chichester impressive, on second thoughts, for christs sake, [and your Bank managers], Keep her away from Nuthurst
