35mm film

Last time I used my Nikon FM2 and got the films processed I noticed that after developing the negatives they were then scanned using a computer and then printed. After comparing the photos with older pictures I had taken from a few years ago I noticed that in doing this the quality was much worse so does anyone know who still processes the prints the old fashion (proper!) way?

Please don't answer with “why don’t you just get a digital camera”!

That's so strange!

Earlier this month I was using my FM2/Nikkor 50mm 1.4, which is capable of superb results, and had exactly the same problem when I got the prints back. (This was from Snappy Snaps, who don't seem to be as good as they used to be even five years ago).

I'd be interested in finding a "proper" processor also, not having the competence or confidence to do it myself.

Gave up a few years ago and went digital for the exact same reasons. And yesterday I updated with a nice new EOS-7D..!

Try Peak Imaging in Sheffield for results that are simply outstanding, provided that you are prepared to pay and, of course, your technique is spot on. When I had film cameras I used them for all my negative processing and printing. I never found anywhere better, but the last time I had a print film done using their professional service it cost about £16 for a 36 exposure film with 7"x5"prints. Not used them since 2006 when I moved to the dark side and bought a Nikon D200.

Here in Leicester, apart from a world class Naim/Linn dealer there is a company called Jacobs and another called Jessops who do film processing

You'd need to be pretty desperate to use either Jacobs or Jessops, if quality is one of your criteria. Unless things are different in the Leicester area...

Peak have a good name for themselves, as does the Darkroom (www.the-darkroom.co.uk). Still not sure about the original poster's question - do any of them make traditional prints or do they all now scan. And if they do all now scan, what qualities are we missing out on? Very interesting questions and I'm curious to see if anyone has experience on this subject.
