Can you guess the dealer advice?

Quick background - System - P3(ortofon 520 MKII), Rega Planet, 72, 140, Cura CA10
Went into a london Naim dealer to ask the following question.
(When the new job comes through) I want to upgrade my system.
Present problem is Cd player has good bass but sounds closed in at the top end and gets lost sometimes.
P3 is the opposite, great mid range and top end but bass light.
Do you reccomend
1) a high cap or new cart to solve the issue on Deck
2)New CDP and if so what would you reccomend (Stated that I had enjoyed the CD3.5 on listening)
Guys see if you can guess what the recomendation was, and any advice you care to give would be welcomed.
I shall give you the answer tomorrow as I do not want to do "a Stallion!" (No offense Stallion but that famous leads one event got the better of me in the end!)
Cheers

Let me guess... "buy an 82" heh heh
My advice would be to buy a Rega Jupiter, which is an astounding CD Player for the money.
Yeah and get a better cartridge... Maybe a Super Elys or Linn Adikt.

So did he recommend you change speakers then?

Did he suggest one of these perhaps...?
Nice.
I'll 2nd the Hi-cap recommendation.

Absolute no brainer - as reviewed by Art Dudley in the current Listener - spend $155 and get the Rega P3 Turntable Upgrade Kit. A simple DIY install on the P3. As Art stated "the Rega upgrade kit is a genuine bargain: Can you think of any other way for $155 to make all your records more fun?"

Paul, thank you made me laugh. Have just moved in with the girlfriend, and at our "welcome to living in sin" party 5 of her friends bought me ear plugs to survive the nagging experience!
Erik what is the upgrade kit?
Steve - think i might put one of those in my car to compete with these London Boys!
I think I'll just tell you all as the guessing game loses appeal pretty quick.
The answer to all my problems is a Musical Fidelity CDP umm 3.2 I think he said.
Now in fairness i've not heard this player, but unless Musical fidelity have had a radical change of design ethos I cound imagine a much wider of the mark recommendation. I did point out that the PRaT elements were key to me, and was assured that it times as well as the CD5 but was far more open.
No offer of a demo or anything. I think i would have at least brought me in on a dem of a CD5 and then perhaps tried MF during the dem comparison if he really thought it was that good.
How come 80% of the dealer staff I meet have no idea about the CUSTOMER? We all have preferences but if I was a sales person I would be trying to help the customer along the lines of what they seem to like. I don't mind being introduced to new kit, but learn how to sell please!
easy answer, which would have got me to stay, would have been - Well Sir as you seem to like the Naim sound why don't we give the high cap and a CD5 or a CDX a go. When would you like a dem? By the way I have a new MF CDP which I think you might like so I'll get that set up too!
I think I'm going to be travelling back to Ringwood for my purchases, Allthough I have had a recommendation from one in St Albans which i will try soon.

If you have a suitable wall, do try a wall shelf for the P3, it certainly helped the bass in my system (more and tighter). Rega shelf is cheap and OK, have not tried Mana or QS etc.

Hi Simon,
I lost the wall shelf argument!
She won. The thumb print is going to take weeks to get off my forehead!

It wasn't one of those crap dealers in London that suggest replacing NAC-A5 with Chord loudspeaker cable?
Andrew
P.S. I haven't made a direct comparison between the Jupitor and CD5, both are worth considering (as is the Linn Genki). However I have heard the Jupitor on a couple of occasions recently and been amazed by how good it is, it grooves, times extrememly well while sounding relaxed in its delivery.

You've got to to spill the beans on which particular London dealer! All in the publics' interests of course.
I've not heard the Rega CDP but heard a Genki against a CD5. Given that I have a Linn Mimik, I really wanted the Genki to do well (sort of reaffirming my original choice) but the CD5 walked all over it. Absolutely no contest - Linn bright , harsh, etc. CD5 musically involving, bags of PRaT, etc.
Regards,
Ed.

I don't know anything about your speakers, so let's assume they're adequate.
To avoid the mullet and actually make a difference you need to go to CDX/LP12 level, anything else is just an upgrade waiting to happen.
So what was your budget? Tony L has a CDX for sale at about 2 HiCAPS.

Hi-cap first. No question.
I originally had an original Planet CDP and listened to the CD5, Jupiter and CDX. I thought the CD5 was better than the Jupiter but it was a close thing. The CD5 had a little bit more drive than the Jupiter, but the Jupiter had a more open sound. I then left the shop with the CDX.
The dealer said with a wicked grin on his face 'why don't you try the CDX?' (heavy Viennese accent). I informed him that I couldn't afford a CDX and had no intention of ever spending that on a CD player. He must have seen me coming. I thought there was no harm in 'just having a listen.' After several coffees and about an hour and a half of listening I was convinced.
I was listening with 112/150/FC2/Intro
Cut a long story short. The CD5 and Jupiter are better than the Planet, but not immensly. The CDX however, is a different animal and if it were my half crowns, would go for the CDX. It sounds better through 72/140/Hi/Credo!
With regards to TT. Try the Super Elys and a decent support. Do the upgrade kit later.
Njoy

Erik what is the upgrade kit?
Planar 2/3 Upgrade Kit
For $150, it is a no-brainer according to the editor of Listener.

MF? No way! They may have just discovered the concept of PR&T, but the tune remains reliably absent with their gear.
However, the Primare D30.2 @ £1500 is dangerously close to the performance of the CDX...
I heard it this week in conjunction with Primare's new A30 integrated and the pre/power combination with Allaes on the back.
Theoretically, this was a Mullet system, but it didn't sound like one!
The pre/power combo was more refined and focussed than the integrated, but it didn't have any more oomph and didn't swing any better than the one-box.
In all, the presentation was one of PR&T, tune, sheer grunt, and a deep (projected) soundstage to boot.
The Naim Allaes were very much at home in this system which also included 5m x2 Naca5, Chord Anthem interconnects, Music Works blocks/leads, and QS Ref. tables.
Regards,
Steve.
The proof of the pudding...

Can get online for a bit now!
Erik - the motor upgrade is that to take a Planner three to P3 status or does it advance a P3
Reading through a few of the older posts there seems to have been the suggestion that a 72 really starts to work with a hi-cap. I'm sure that the TT will benefit. Yet I know the system is mullet shaped, at least as far as the CDP, will the high cap get more out of the planet or will it just highlight its weakness more?
I can only do one upgrade at the moment and want an even progression untill I've decided which route (TT or CDP)i will actively persue.
We are due to have the electrics done soon and i may get a mains spur done - should this influence my choice at all?
Cheers

I was only responding on what my ears told me. I lived with the Planet for 3 years. My main source is my P9. To get a real sonic upgrade I felt that the CD5 and Jupiter (although better) were not really 'much' better than the Planet IMVHO.
The CDX was much better than the Planet and the CD5. I like CD for the most part for the convienience and although easy to listen to, the Planet could never compare to the P9. I wanted something which would make a substantial difference to my CD collection (which i have heavily invested in). CDX offered that. CD5 and Jupiter didn't.
Stereophile? I don't really care what they think. They have their opinion. I have mine. I trust mine more. I have to live with it!
I enjoy CDX as much as the P9 (although the P9 has a certain magic about it). I went for the more expensive CDX because it would cost me more to buy CD5, sell it, buy CDX! Once I had heard CDX I knew I couldn't settle for the less sonically satisfying CD5. Will I get XPS? Maybe. But not in the forseeable future. Am I happy. Absolutely. No ugraditis yet.
