Linn Isobarik Speakers and a NAIM system.

Posted by: seamus88 on 09 November 2003

Hello all,

As usual I am looking to upgrade parts of my system. At the present I have a Rega Planet, 32.5, 140, HICAP and Paradigm speakers. I've recently listened to a NAIM system that used Isobarik speakers. Would my system be able to drive Isobarik speakers? Or is the amp too small?

Thanks, S

You really need a 250 to start get the best out of the passive Briks . I presume the sistem you heard was using passive Briks?

Thanks for the response.

Yes, they were passive Briks. They were auditioned using two 135s and a 250. It sounds as though I would need to upgrade to a 250.

Hi Seamus

Everything is relative. Briks have been run with Nait 1's and 2's. It can be done.

If you have the offer of a nice pair of 'briks; don't let the 140 stop you. It'll do just fine, until you can afford a 250.

Moderate volume levels shouldn't be a problem with a 140 - just don't push it!

Good luck.

I concur, I heard Briks with a Nait 2 playing Shubert lieder at moderate levels and the sound was fantastic. The baritone voice was full and realistic. Other speakers that I have heard need lots of power to begin to approximate the fullness in the voice that the Briks were capable of producing even with a lowly Nait.

The Briks are a relatively easy speaker to drive in passive form, despite their size.

The 140 is also a pretty powerful amp, so it will work fine. Just do not over do it.

This is valid with briks using internal crossovers. No problem to drive those with a NAP140 or even a 110.

Briks with the big external crossover needing much more power to control.

A couple of thoughts:
1) Briks seem a bit big for your system.
2) How loud do you listen - if you never go above 10 o'clock then you've probably got spare power. (You could also try marking your dials so they got up to 11 to make them louder Smile).
3) Briks are physically very big!
4) Most Linn/Naim owners would love some briks.

Hello all,

Thanks for the information, views and advice. It is all greatly appreciated.

Let me give you a little more background.

I am not interested in "loud" music, rather low to mid range.

What I want is quality sound from the source (Rega Planet 2000), amp (Naim 140), pre-amp (Naim 32.5, with 72 boards), and speakers (currently Paradigm Monitor 3). I will be using the Black Snaic and Naim 5 speaker cable. The room is approximately, 20 ft by 20 ft.

I think the weakness of the system is the speakers; hence, the research into what can make the system better...within my budget.

Agains, thanks for the comments!
