Soldering bnc-connectors

Posted by: Robbie on 30 January 2002

Hello everybody,

I,ve got an old but trusty Dual cs-5000 turntable and with 500 lp's around I'd like to spin records via the nac-72.However the 72 has bnc inputs and the dual has rca outputs. My question is:must I replace the original cable with a coax cable (75 ohm) or can i just solder the bnc plugs to the original wire ?

Regards,Rob.

You just solder the BNCs to the original wire.

Have fun!

Thanks Mike,

But how to do it excactly ? I've tried it on last sunday but all I got was a massive distortion and no sound at all !

I would say you need to be very proficient to mess with phono leads, as a stop gap you can easily get BNC to RCA adapters I got a couple from Maplins a local electrics store for £4.

IIRC, the 72 came with instructions on how to solder those BNCs. I'll try to find it later tonite and scan it...

Mike, I too would be interested in the instructions. I can use a soldering iron as long as I'm not doing any board work. I have not looked into putting the BNC's on ( Don't have them yet. ) Was planning on picking them up on my next trip to the parts store.

Any suggestions on BNC make ? - or do i just go to my local electronics house ( CounterParts in London On) and pick up whats in the bin?

Thanks,

michael

RCA in, BNC out, about $2 each.

After re-fitting the bnc's are ok now, no noise just music. It's very important that the signal core is soldered properly into the very little pin, than make sure that the outer makes good contact with the bnc connector on the inside(earthing). It took me around ten minutes ,so it's not that difficult.

i was under impression that if you use bnc you have to use coax cable (50 ohm) - this is not true? i noticed that everyone is talking about soldering bnc plugs onto normal wire.

I swear my 72 came with a little pamphlet illustrating BNC connection, but either I lost it or it was a figment of my imagination.

No coax needed. BNCs just attach to existing tonearm leads.

For most applications in the lab the screen of the cable (-ve) is held in mechanical contsct with the BNC plug (either that or crimped). For Audio it is ESSENTIAL that the negative is soldered, otherwise it degrades over time as teh copper oxidises. Generally it is a pig to do as the bit you solder the negative to is relatively large and takes a lot of heat. Good idea to do this before soldering in the centre pin, but after feeding the nut and grommit onto the cable.

Willy.

Why does Naim uses BNC for phono and DIN for others in the first place?

If they are more superior, wouldn't it be better to change the RCA sockets to BNC or DIN for non-Naim equipment?

Can someone enlighten me?

Thanks.

for all interested how to add bnc plugs. the pre amps manual which is available on naim website shows how to assembly those plugs (page 7).
