EL8 setup

Posted by: Kyew on 05 February 2003

I shall be receiving a pair of used rega EL8 anytime soon. it will be connected to my 92R/90.3. can anyone help with some basic info on speaker positioning? do you just put it right up against the wall like the kan mk1/mk2?

Great speakers! I used to run them until last month, with 92R/Hicap/140.

As for positioning they're not desperately fussy. They're open to a bit of moving around depending on your room, but I used to find that 4 to 8 inches away was the best.

You must make sure the spikes are dead level and sitting on something solid though. They're not that heavy, so care with set-up to ensure they're rigid has a pretty big impact on performance.

Happy listening!

I have a pair in the master bedroom, connected to a Roksan Kandy stack.

I really like these speakers. Articulate, fast, good high end and prodigious bass. As Stevo said, they're not tremendously fussy with respect to placement.

The bedroom is a bit small, though, so I have them about 8-10 inches from the wall. Otherwise the bass gets a little out of hand.

I've yet to try the EL8s with the CDS2/52/500 in the den. In fact, trying speakers in general with the Naim kit is a pain in the ass because I would ideally like to move the DBLs out of the way first. Argh. Perhaps I should invest in a refridgerator dolly.

My recollection of EL8's is that they have pnderous, slow bass, and naff cabinet finish. Kytes were much (much) better.

My setup hints (as such) would involve flammable liquid and a match! Cool

YMMV.

Thanks for the info. i have got them connected and i must say they sound fast and articulate. i certainly don't find the bass slow at all.
i'd save the flammable liquid and match for other speakers i've heard. Cool

Yah, I don't find the EL8s so objectionable at all. I mean, they're not SBLs or ATCs, but still. And if you can find them used, they're very good value for money.

They ARE transmission line designs, though, and have some curious behavior with bass-heavy content at loud volume - boominess and an odd resonance. But still very listenable.

Kyew,

I am assuming you are talking about Rega EL8 and not ELA.
The EL8 is actually an extention (cabinet wise) of the Kytes, and both have identical drivers.

I use my Kytes extensively and love them on my 72/140.
I use them right against the rear wall to give more base (they are front-ported anyway), firing straight ahead without toe-in, just make sure you have enough breathing space on both sides.

The only complain about Rega speakers is that they sound somewhat thin. So if you like full-bodied vocal then look elsewhere.

Oh, if you don't like them, I'm a ready taker.
Have fun.

pleased to hear they're working well for you!

If you love the Kytes, and want "a more full-bodied vocal" then probably the EL8's are for you.

the more i listen to them the more i like the sound of my EL8. the design of these little floorstanders suit my small (4.5m by 3m) listening room. no more rear ported speakers, it's sealed boxes for me from now on.

btw, Somesuch is right abt the curious behaviour of the EL8 on bass heavy content during loud levels. but i'm fine with that as my listening levels are moderate.

i heartily recommend them to pple who need cheap and good speakers for their naims.
