iPod speakers
Posted by: bruce on 01 August 2006
My son is hankering after speakers for his Nano for his birthday later this month. I have previously heard the Bose SoundDock but can't say I was over-impressed. He's thinking of something like the Altec Lansing inMotion iM7 or the iPod Hi-Fi. Does anyone have experience of either of these? Any other recommendations will also be gratefully received! TIA

I thought the JBL on tour was a good compromise between size and sound.

Well, I bought mine after some auditions at the local computer shop - the tiny little units into which you dock your ipod sound awful. I ended up with a pair of JBL Duets (available in ipod white) for about £30-40. They work pretty well both with my laptop and my ipod. But (and this may be a problem for you) they do have to be mains powered.

I use mine with my Tivoli portable radio. It is mono, but the sound is very good and the whole package is very good VFM.

Have a look on www.ilounge.com for all iPod speaker reviews. This one sounds 'interesting' :-
GINI Systems has introduced its new iProducts line, which initially includes a tube-based 2.1 speaker system and an iPod docking station. “Together, they form a complete iPod audio system that instantly converts digital tunes into music with ‘tube warmth’ that audiophiles have come to know and enjoy,” says GINI. The iTube speaker system ($379) combines vacuum tube and solid-state audio technologies, and features an iPod-like design, an amplifier with a built-in subwoofer, a pair of satellite speakers, and a remote control. GINI’s iConec ($79) iPod docking station features component and S-video output, a full function remote control, built-in charging, and five iPod adapters.

Norman, I tried to do this but the volume was incredibly low requiring iPod and Tivoli volume turned up high with consequent loss of quality. The Tivoli is not one of the newer ones specifically designed for an iPod but I wondered if this was a set up issue on the iPod I could fix?

Thanks for the suggestions. www.ilounge.com is certainly full of information which will take me awhile to chew through.

Another vote for the JBL On Tours, don't know how they make something so (relatively) musical out of such small speakers, very neat too.

Hi Bruce,
I have never had that problem. I do use the iPod dock or Send Station's Pocket Dock to get a line level feed that bypasses the volume control. In fact, I would say that with that arrangement, I am only using the lowest 1/3 of the volume excursion to get useable volumes. I can't explain your experience, but doubt that there would be a major change in the gain specification for the "Aux" input on the back simply with the recent iPod craze.
