Google Earth

Anybody tried it out? A complete atlas of the world which lets you zoom in from outer space to somebody's back garden (in most of the US at any rate - not so detailed elsewhere). I installed it a couple of days ago and I'm already addicted.

Tomk,
Just tried and got:
Google Earth downloads temporarily delayed
Thanks for your interest in Google Earth, but we're sorry we can't offer you a download right now. As you know, Google Earth is in beta, and we're still building out our ability to take on new users. We're making good progress, and expect to be able to accept new downloads shortly, so we recommend you check back daily at earth.google.com. We hope to be able to welcome you and other new planet surfers soon
I will try again later.

It'll be back up later on but it's definitely worth trying.
My older son was born in California but remembers nothing of it as we came back to Scotland when he was a year old. I was able to show him our house, the area of the garden where he first used his baby walker, and the pool where he was able to swim virtually unaided at 6 months. I actually found it quite touching.

Give it a couple of years and you'll be able to look inside your old house.
Presumably there is someone in California looking down on your present house and reminiscing.
It’s reassuring to know we’re increasingly not on our own.
(No. Mother, my mother, uh, what is the phrase? - she isn't qu-quite herself today.) Did I type that out aloud?

Typical photo overlay of a random area of Denmark zoomed in on the map. Photo overlay available in transparent or solid. Property lines, boundaries, areas, local rates and ground taxes on any property available at the click of a button and all free of charge to anyone owning a computer.
You saw it here first!

The really detailed areas are those little shaded rectangles. Does their position ever change, or is it possible to change their position?

Check out the Grand Canyon. It's 3-D! Unbelievable.

Totally amazing.
I've found several houses I've lived in, and my bloody Landcruiser is visable in my driveway!!!
Best I can figure is the pics in my area are about a year old. Don't know about other places.
I've spent several hours "surfing" the globe finding places I've been (including Ethiopia and Nigeria) and places I'd like to go.
We are off to St. Louis this weekend for a wedding and I showed my kids the Arch with this.
High speed connection required, of course!
Just do it, you'll enjoy it for sure.

Where can i see the UFO's parked at groom lake?

At groom lake or burried deep within the Keyhole Community.

I found that if I held down the middle button (the scrolling wheel on my mouse) and moved the mouse then I could swivel the picture in three degrees of freedom - allowing me then to use the mouse to fly through the canyons. The "terrain" box needs to be checked for that though.
I see that CNN is using Google Earth in their broadcasts.

Truly amazing stuff. Ocean contours too.

The pyramids look pretty impressive too in the context of where they stand next to the town (Gisa?). As someone who's never been to Egypt I didn't realise how close they were to 'civilisation'. They always look to be in the middle of the desert.

You should see the Queen Mary - now that's one big ship... (anyone know what the cruiseliner next to her is???)

I had to jump into this thread, because this is too cool!
Google earth is only the start - if you can geotag your photos (embed GPS coordinate data for where they were taken) and host them on flickr then you can see the real location, as photographed by other people.
Geobloggers brings the technologies together. Plus if you've got google earth installed it will send the photo thumbnail to that.
I was playing around with it and managed to upload some of my photos of the pyramids (Nothing to do with Shayman mentioning them, I did this a while ago but a happy coincidence all the same). Incidentally they are an awe-inspiring sight and well worth the trip

Just been to see Mt Everest and was amazed to find that if you click the terrain box it all goes 3D and you can see the contours etc much better.
Amazing really.

I see there are more of detailed pictures covering Iraq and Middle East than there is of Blighty.
Funny that.
Also, if you search roswell, new mexico. Lots of 'crop circles' nearby the airbase. Course it could be sewage farms.
Any other interesting searches?

Have you pointed your browser at Google Earth Community of late? It looks like a good place to start your quest for interesting searches.

It looks like an airfield with hangars...? What am I missing?
Posted on: 14 October 2005 by JeremyD
Not bad resolution - I can even see the shape of our patio. Our house, however, is a little fuzzy compared with other houses nearby - you can't really make out its shape. The pics must be about two years out of date, since an ugly and enormous house has since been built in an adjoining garden.
