My undersanding (others will dissagree) is that there is little between the 72 and 102 but the 102 has remote. Why not upgrade the CD3 instead. You may get better results for the money. Or even put a HICAP on the CD3.

I intend to add a subwoofer (opppsss...) and think that 102 with more inputs/ outputs will give me more flexibility (is that true?).
Another issue: I'm listening a lot to a radio, so the cd isn't the only source.
Is the 250 other path to upgrading?

I have owned the 72, 102, 180 and 250. For my money, the 72 is as good as the 102, but differant in that it isn't quite as detailed, but has a bit more grunt, if you know what I mean.

That said, I sorely miss the 102 for the remote control. I may look for another for that reason along.

The cd3 cannot be upgraded with a hicap.

I think the 180 to 250 move is huge with a pair of SBL's (what I have now), but less worthwhile with my pair of proacs. For whatever that is worth.

I've had an almost identical system to you, bar the speakers and a Flatcap 2 instead of the high cap.

I upgraded the 3.5 and 72 at the same time to a CDX/102 but if I'd only had enough dosh for either I'd probably have gone for the 102 before the CDX. For my money the 102's much better than the 72 and going the pre route improved all my sources.

If you for a 102 now, then when funds allow and you want to spend money on CD, get the CDX and move your hicap onto the 102. It'll love you for it!

I find the 102 not to be a cost effective upgarde from a 72 - that is, it may be better, but not in proportion to its cost.

I really liked the 72/250. If you're buying new, can you get to a dealer to see which you prefer?

Kuba,

Before getting a 102 do listen to the 82 as well.

For me, upgrading from 72 to 102 wasn't worth the price. My original intention was to upgrade my 140, but listening to the changes going 72 - 102 - 82 changed my mind. After that I just had to go for an 82, knowing that I wouldn't be satisfied with a 102.

The 82 really is that much better!

I agree, but I don't think cd3/82 is a great idea!

Assuming you want to stay Naim, I think CDX first is the better option - then 82.

Before you desert your trusty 72 - have you removed the spare boards (e.g., phono). That is an upgrade it itself. Then upgrade the cd 3 to a 3.5 and buy * cap, or go straight to a CDX.
