Weiss Minerva/DAC2 into Naim Amp

Posted by: JYOW on 06 July 2009

DHT et al,

Have any of you folks using the Weiss DAC straight into your Naim Power amp? How does it compare with your Naim pre?

I've not tried the Weiss into the 250. The Lavry / 250 didn't work too well - poor volume adjustment and a lack of bass - probably poor impeadance matching. The Weiss via my 282 sounds so good, i'm not tempted by the straight 250 route.

May be you should? I am also an ex-DA10 user thinking of getting a Weiss Minerva or DAC2.

Any thought to share? My main use would be with the Transporter with AES/EBU and word clock in.

Nah - the weiss volume control is a bit of a faff and and other sources need to go through the system.

The Weiss (to me) via Toslink sounds similar to the DA10 - via Firewire it really shines. Amarra is the icing on the cake. Give it a go - the Minerva is just the DAC2 with a nicer case.

Although the DAC2 has push buttons in retro Naim CB 250 power button green Roll Eyes

James, to add to my comment on your previous posts, your system is as example of class and simplicity. I am tempted.

And re the DAC2 look, may be the green is part of what drew to it? They should make one in green Smile

Thanks - i'm very pleased. The Weiss would run rather well with the AES/EBU out of the transporter Winker

Nice pictures James. Very crispy.

I cant speak to the potential/imaginary benefits of using Amarra. But I sure know you have a sweet camera.

More please...

Am i seeing that this DAC is not hi-res compatible? Strange.

The Weiee is up to 24/192.

The front panel uses 48 & 44.1 X2 and X4 tpo come up with 48, 96, 192, 44.1, 88.2, and 176.4

What do you mean he doesn't have a clue? The Weiss samples up to 192 24bit, what kind of language is that to use on a forum, would you behave like that face to face/ I think not.

Sure he would but that's our Munch. Roll Eyes If he hasn't teed you off, you should feel slighted.
DHT, How's the PC coming along?

JS Hi, foobar loaded, do I need asio 4 all ?

Why the reaction Munch?

I actually didn't know what I was talking about because I don't own the Weiss yet. But I do know the sampling rates it supports but I can do multiplication. So I'd think that it is a very good guess.

Munch you have been taking shots at me. I suspect you are ticked at me for not worshiping the DA10. What can I say, I owned one and did not think it was anything special compared to my mid price Transporter and CD5X.

You feel differently and it works well on your system, and I respect that.

People who do not feel the same as you are not all out to get you you know.

dht,

I have never really heard a difference running Foobar with ASIO and without. Give it a shot.

If it makes no sonic difference to you, you might as well not use it.

I am fairly sure that it has been about 4 years since the myth about the dreaded effects of the K-Mixer was exposed.

Keep all system volumes at 100%, turn off all "system sounds" in preferences, and only play one stream of audio through your "card" and you will be bit perfect without any resampling by Windows.

You can safely use the Foobar volume.

Hope this helps...

Haven't fiddled with Foobar for a bit but this one should be a better ASIO to try. http://www.foobar2000.org/?page=Download If you go to Weiss's own "Information on computer based audio playback" they also recommend this ASIO plugin for Foobar and I've seen them do the same for MM in the past. Once you're running, play a bit with the buffer settings.

Cheers guys.

Gentlemen, I've had to delete a couple of posts using language that won't be tolerated on this forum. They didn't say anything interesting so nothing missed, but please, if you want your posts to stand then use of the "f" word won't cut it.

Let's keep it clean and on topic.

Sorry Richard... I am washing my mouth out with soap as I type. I thought Bloody = "F" word, was just playing around American style...

JS,
In your past experience with Foobar what was your opinion on ASIO vs Direct Sound?

I typically have fairly acute hearing, e.g. I can easily discern between a V0 (or 320) and a FLAC everytime.

Perhaps the difference between DS and ASIO are similar in magnitude to WAV vs FLAC. The latter being one in which my hearing threshold is definitely not sufficient to perceive any difference.

Foobar v iTunes, EAC v MM or iTunes, WAV v ALAC v FLAC, ASIO v DS, Toslink v Coax, are all cases which escape my abilities to differentiate.

Am I missing something?

thx

I t's been too long with foobar but with MM it's more significant than what lossless you're using. The thing is, until you have all your ducks in a very straight row, many if these things aren't as significant if at all but when it's all right, it's rather important. DHT now has a DICE interface that should allow him to hear what I've been talking about. That he can hear Amarra is better says something because I believe that the MAC mixer is at least as good as the Windows one. Things are falling into place. I still Like MM (winamp)as it's got a very nice ASIO driver available and can decode anything and still play out ASIO unlike Amarra. Foobar should do the same though Amarra could or could not still sound better with an uncompressed file. If you had a SN and a TC instead of the interim pieces you do now, I suspect you'd be in agreement. Sorry if that sounds like a slight as it wasn't meant that way in the least but a TC and a SN would put it in perspective as should the DAC2 for DHT. Are you using Vista or XP. Isn't everything through the XP mixer outputted at 48/16 regardless of input or interface?
