Skipping cd player; How often does a new puck fix it?

Posted by: Markus on 16 September 2003

Having read numerous posts lately about skipping cd players I notice that there seem to be two "fixes" for this condition, depending on how old/worn the transport/puck system is.

Either:
A) Replace the puck or
B) Replace the transport.

Now that my cd 3.5 is starting to experience some occasional skipping, I'm curious about what others experiences are on how well the two options above work. I'm assuming here that, it the compression rings on the puck are worn out, replacing the transport wouldn't make a difference. And if the transport is dying, a fresh puck also wouldn't help.

Care to share your experiences, anyone?

What was the cost of having the new transport installed?

A puck is generally the problem on starting a disk. for instanc it might slip and read ERR

Sometimes, the puck can be responsible when you can't get the disk to start from say track ten, again it will slip.

If what you are experiencing is skipping randomly and not the above, then I would say its unlikely to be the puck.

As usual check its not the same CDs being problematic, Early Warner CDs avd an indent around where the puck takes hold, a bit os sticky tape on this area normally cures it.

Hi Markus

Your 3.5 transport could be on the way out. If you're still happy with the sound, it may be worth getting it back to Salisbury UK to be 'breathed on'.

I bought a refurbished CD3, with a new transport from my dealer that sounds great.

FWIW I'm a great believer in keeping the puck off the platter when not in use, to keep it more 'sticky'.

Good luck.

Sounds like nobody has fixed a "skipping" problem with a new puck--apparently only a new transport will do the trick.

Anyone else care to share their experience?
