Heard some the other day but know nothing about it or artists, can anyone recommend some good stuff to listen to (preferably available on vinyl).
PS whats the difference between a xylophone and a glockenspiel (no funny jokers if you please), thanks.

Well in the jazz world, Bobby Hutcherson was a master and innovator on vibraphone. Yeah, I know there are others but for sheer pleasure check out any of his Blue Notes from the mid-60's. Personally Components and Stick Up are my favourites in terms of sidemen and compositions but he also played some great roles on other peoples dates; Idle Moments by Grant Green is an all time classic. And on Eric Dolphy's Out To Lunch , his chiming notes seem to hang, suspended in the air.

I think that a xylophone is played in the horizontal plane while a glock is vertical, but I claim no great expertise!

Xylophones have wooden bars. Glockenspiels, vibraphones etc have metal bars.

You may like to give Roy Ayers a spin. "Vibesman" is recorded live at Ronnie Scotts.
Just putting it on now....
Graham.
