I love my iPod more than most folks on this forum but would rather have a s/h CD5x for this price.

Their point is that the i-pod sound will be as good as CD through a hi-fi, but with the convenience of music storage. As true portability is not important here, the same result can be obtained by connecting the digital output of a silent notebook PC (e.g. Vaio) into a good external DAC (e.g. Russ Andrews DAC-1). Which is exactly what I did for our New Years Eve party, and jolly good it was too.

I'll never get that on the plane.................
What's the battery life, just in case?

One of the early portable MP3 machines (before Apple ruled the world)came with a Toslink digital output fitted. Probably available on e-bay for pennies. If there is demand, I'm sure Apple will release a digital output i-pod for a good deal less than two grand.
