New mobile phone
Posted by: JAB on 11 July 2007
Hi all. Time to upgrade again and was wondering if anyone has any recommendations on what to short list?
Key priorities are good battery life, small and light.
Currently using a Samsung D600 which I have got on well with so am looking at the U100 and U600 for a start.
Cheers

Sony Ericsson w880i.
I quite often think I've left it at home, only to realise it was in my pocket all along - very slim (9mm) and light (71g). No battery problems so far.

I've had a Samsung A920 for six months or so. Love it. Not particularly slim, but I don't notice that as it's very nice to handle and to carry around in a pocket. It's clamshell though - I notice your choices are sliding phones.

Another vote for the Nokia 6300.
Just got mine to replace an N70 which, while having more features, was a royal pain in the arse.
The 6300 is light has good battery life and strong reception. The 2MP camera is decent enough too.
I bought a larger memory card from play.com (the one it comes with is tiny and the 2GB Nokia card is £72 as opposed to £14 for the play.com version) and have around 25 albums stored on it, with bags of room to spare for more music or photos.
It's got a stainless steel case too, so you can just drop it in your pocket and know its sturdy enought to withstand the odd bump.
Regards,
Steve O.

Another vote for nokia 6xxx series. Good easy to use, and even the company I work for choose Nokia as their globally preferred handset.

Don't get a Nokia N73. Read the reviews and I bought it because it was supposed to have the best camera at the time. Absolute crap on every level. These magazine reviews have to be lying on purpose, nobody could be that wrong by accident.

Junior has just upgraded to a U600 and passed on her old D600. For what it's worth the navigation and handling is better than my Sony-Ericsson 750i.None seem as intuitive as the Nokia navigation though.Apparently the latest Nokia's have changed their navigation system so whether that last statement still applies GOK.

They are lying ! - for the same reason that Hifi (most anyway) mags contain reviews that are about as trust worthy as George W Bush...the mighty power of favourable reviews equaling advertising spend with magazine, oh and of course we can't forget the good old boys back hander donations.
Read 100 reviews and take about 5% as knowing a little about what they tested - some reviews of Hifi equipment have been known to have been written without actually listening to it...

Really? Mine's very good....for a phone camera. Good all round phone, if a little slow.

I am Doc's side on this one. The damned thing is a brick, and the camera is useless. My company have just "upgraded" us to Nokia 3310 phones. It is at least very light. My private phone is a SonyEricsson 850i (I think). Seems to be pretty robust though the screen is useless in any kind of light. The radio is handy on the train in the morning though signal quality seems to be very variavle between here and Waterloo.

Cooeee! they are called mobile PHONES not music centers ,cameras, cash points coffee machines or whatever. How can 1 item do all the things that people want or expect it to do perfectly?
I don't see too may threads with guys asking "which is the best digital camera for listening to the radio?" Or "the best Ipod for taking pictures?"

To be fair, the phone manufacturers started it - and raised the expectations of their customers.
I don't expect a digital SLR to make phone calls - but I have found, to my surprise, that having a camera in my cellphone has been much more handy than I ever thought it would be.

I too have found the phone camera useful but I am not whingeing about it not being as good as my EOS 350.
Posted on: 15 July 2007 by Deane F
..and I don't think anybody here is whinging about that either...

I didn't think these were too bad for a mobile phone.

I think they were moaning the results from at least one of the cameras mentioned.
I did exaggerate a little re the EOS.

Jay which phone do you have?

If those photos are from a Nokia N73, I need to take mine back to the shop.
Posted on: 16 July 2007 by Jay
Yes. Both taken by the n73.
Chris. The Saturday - well spotted! I think that shot was just before the HUGE downpour! Still had a good time though...

Another vote for the Nokia 6300. Had one a week and it's the best mobile I've ever owned. Superb screen, easy to use, lots of features, slim and well-built.

That was quite a storm wasn't it! I hope you weren't one of the poor sods in flip-flops, shorts and a tee shirt! We had at least packed our lightweight waterproofs.
It was a good event though, despite the weather.
I have some similar pics , though I was attratced by the garish colours. It was the first outing for my new camera - I was very pleased to have a decent waterproof bag for it!

Luckily we both took waterproof jackets. Didn't stop us getting wet though!
Good day out all in all. Liked the new Crowded House material and Peter was amusing.

- whether buttons react instantly when you press them, unlike ma W810i which is a royal PITA in this regard;
- whether you can sync it with Outlook contacts and sort them by family name and not first name (this didn't work on earlier Nokia phones) and
- whether the integrated MP3 player and phones are good (soundwise and easy to use, not with these impossible playlists that were needed on the 6230)
- and finally whether the data cable had to be bought separately.
Thanks.
