New mobile phone
Posted by: JAB on 11 July 2007
Hi all. Time to upgrade again and was wondering if anyone has any recommendations on what to short list?
Key priorities are good battery life, small and light.
Currently using a Samsung D600 which I have got on well with so am looking at the U100 and U600 for a start.
Cheers

Having played with one in an Apple Store in the US last week, I have to agree. However, I hate to think what your phone bill will be if you are using the AT&T phone on international roaming in the UK!
Cheers

May I jump on the occasion and ask you...
- whether buttons react instantly when you press them, unlike ma W810i which is a royal PITA in this regard;
- whether you can sync it with Outlook contacts and sort them by family name and not first name (this didn't work on earlier Nokia phones) and
- whether the integrated MP3 player and phones are good (soundwise and easy to use, not with these impossible playlists that were needed on the 6230)
- and finally whether the data cable had to be bought separately.
Thanks.

Yes they do, although sideways navigation is a bit fiddly.
Never tried synching it with Outlook, mainly cause I never use that program! I'm sure the Nokia site would answer that one. But you can sort contacts either by surname or first name - the choice is yours.
Not tried using the MP3 player yet, so I've no idea about sound quality, but it seems pretty easy to use, and the radio reception is quite good. To be honest I've got an iPod so I'm not interested in making the pone an MP3player anyway.
And yes, the data cable had to be bought separately! (Which is why I haven't tried a lot of things on it yet).
Hope that helps a bit.

Steer clear of the current sony phones.

Why?
I guess it depends what you demand of your phone. I want one that is small, reliable and has decent battery life. I use it to make and receive calls....and that is about it. I don't text/surf/listen to MP3s/radio/download pop videos or whatever else people do.
My Sony K550i is slim and neat, easy to use, the battery seems to last for ever and as a bonus it has a camera that is actually surprisingly good for fun snaps.
What is so wrong about it!

The people i know with Sony phones (and i am one of them) have found faults with them. They feel more 'plasticky' than other phones i have had, the battery on mine did last ages but is now starting to need charged more often. Every few months the phone takes to shutting down completely for no reason, i have sent it back twice and it was never found to have a fault.
I will say it has the best quality and handling camera i have used on a phone. This however can't make up for all the problems i have had. Only a few months however until i can upgrade.
