Support tables

Chaps

I have been away on business for the last couple of days and when I got home, I had a parcel which contained a Townsend s/sink table which I bought secondhand.

These tables come in different sizes to accomodate the weight of the black box which is plonked on them. The one I ordered was the smallest one which accomodates items up to 8 kilograms in weight.

Tony from Hifi choice forum brought a similar table with him just for demonstration purposes and it made a useful improvement when placed under my CDS11 which is housed on a Hutter rack.

The CDS11 is right up to the 8 kilo limit, so I tried the Townshend under the CD3.5 which is on top of a Mana Soundframe which in turn is on top of a Sound Organisation table. The CD3.5 is much lighter in weight.

So I removed the Mana and replaced it with the Townshend and the difference in sound was enormous. The Townshend has made everything better and more natural sounding by a massive degree. The system is so much more listenable than before.

My two sons were in the house at the time and both of them said it was damn good and agreed it trashed the Mana. It certainly looks a lot better.

I shall buy a larger version for the CDS11 when I come back from holiday.

If anyone wants a Mana soundframe, make me an offer, but I fly out Thursday, so be quick.

Regards

As you well know, I have made you an irresistable and unbeatable offer already.

Also, may I repeat, placing a SoundFrame on anything other than the ground renders any comparison meaningless. Placing Mana on top of other supports stops it working properly - believe me, I've experimented enough to know this.

Having said that, I've decided that glass is not the ideal support platform for a CDS2. Naim thought that too until the Fraim came along.

I have a CD seismic sink from Townshend Audio (pristine condition). If you want we can do a straight exchange with you soundframe. I send my CD seismic sink to England to you and you send the Mana soundframe to me in Canada. Let me know if you want. My email is tuan6084@rogers.com

The Mana has already been sold.

Mrs Mick also prefers the Townshend bigtime.

well once I’ve tried it, then with a CD3 and less good equipment. Then I found this support unlistenable.

How is it? I didn't think cones worked as well as the "regular" spike/Neuance interface nevermind plopping the whole thing on a big wooden structure.

Even geekier,

Quotation from Paul D
“If the Townsend support is right then both Mana and the Naim frame are very wrong indeed.”

Of course they are. And if Mana and Naim are right then the Townshend is absolutely wrong indeed.

To my best knowledge it was me who has suggested on this very forum to deal with Townshend’s big pneumatic support system. (It’s to the S. sink like the lion to the cat.) Now, following the Naim route, possessing an (only imitated) Fraim I would not recommend listening to the Townshend that much.

I most certainly intend to make the visit.

Somehow or other I followed a link on this site last Friday and ended up reading about Hifi Tony’s visit to Mick’s and how much he disliked the “Niam” system. In order to get a fuller picture, could you enlighten us please as to what his system comprises of.
Many Thanks.

Many thanks, found it under “what u got”. As he appears to be a car engine tuner, was not too surprised to find it is heavily modded. So at £6k, I assume for the non-AV bits, it seems to be quite cheap by average Naim standards, although quite expensive compared to my current set up.
I will need to visit the round earth prior to any future upgrade, for comparison purposes but my somewhat mulletted system will remain as is until I get the nod from the God of Jobs or Lottery Wins.

"Naim thought that too until the Fraim came along."
Where did you get this from? not naim!

Its amazing how much stuff gets made up in here!

Someone really ought to do a PHD with the material on here.

I have been told many times by many people that when some of the guys at Naim were moving away from Mana and towards Hutter one of the reasons given was the glass shelving of Mana.

If this is not the case I am happy as always to stand corrected.

PS Shame about the last 5 mins of last night's game wink

I think the original anti-glass thing came from NANA, not Salisbury. Mr S. himself was a Mana user 'till the advent of the Fraim

As far as I can recall Mr S used many racks but before the Fraim used Projekt and Hutter.

But does it matter?

ps. Marco - you can't believe how much I am pissing myself laughing everytime james posts right now. wink

err no it was hutter before but it lacked the dynamics Roy and I needed, so we made the fraim!

Manuted and Leeds are the teams for me!

send me a copy of the email. It may well be we were talking about the naim demo room. This should not be turned into an anti-mana thread. We still tell people to use it/audition it with others!

I agree lets keep it clean.

In fact James, you'd be delighted to know that I have reconverted to the dark side and have a whole collection Mana stands (Phase 4 under LP12, Phase 2 Under CDS2 and 8 tier amp rack).

I think they are better than the Projekt stands I used to have. The most important thing I have noticed is better PRaT and dynamics but I am still waiting for the musical "flow" to arrive this is where I feel it's a bit lacking to the Projekt but hopefuly as the equipment and stands settle down (I have recently moved) this will arrive.

"email that I 'got into' Mana. How ironic!"

We have recommended to hundreds of people to listen to mana no regrets. You should really try a fraim at home though! Or at least some chips under your mana!

James,

Give this a go. I've got some chips under my Mana (mainly protect my floor) but I did a A/B with the Linn table and I thought it was a bit better -mainly in the bass. I've also got them under the speakers which helps them and the floor.

King Edwards offer better leading edge definition..

Early days to be saying the gunners have it sown up, although, having watched them play last week, the fat lady does seem to be doing some vocal exercises early this season.

James

Thanks for agreeing that you need to shup up. Diplomacy is a wonderful thing.

May I suggest that you not only place some chips under your Mana but that you also insert a Townshend s/sink table between the Mana and your source components. It will improve your already excellent sound dramatically.

I think, James, you have touched on a very important variable that influences the final sound. I've got a largish room too 18' x 15' with a 12' ceiling and I was very surprised at how 'large' the system sounded in this room. n particular I was surprised at how high ceilings affect the sound in a very positive way. Big rooms (especially ones that are underdamped) need driving though and I suppose I am prime candidate for a bigger amp.

listening to a good hi-fi system should be an emotive experience, and when you're lucky enough to own one that connects you to the music on an emotional as well as physical level; that's something very special indeed.

Absolutely. For me that something very special is very hard to desribe, everyone has their own view about that magical sound, but the way a Naim system (including the speakers!) portrays the music, with that fantastic rhythm and emotion is just out of this world. I listen to all sorts of music and I need something that gives me the slam of Grooverider's Drum and Bass, with the deftness of Dave Holland's bass along with the beauty of Imrat Khans sitar playing. Most other make systems (especially other speakers) I've heard tend to do only one of the styles right (i.e Grooverider sounds slamming but Dave Hollands double bass sounds broken). regards, dev

ps. one of the best systems for slamm I have heard is the system in Room 2 of Fabric (the super-club in London) I was there on Friday and my ears have just stopped ringing. frown

Actually Maris Piper are a hard and waxy potato so they are more likely to be suitable in this context than the otherwise generally superior, but soft and flowery, King Edward.

Matthew

PS Supporting Man Utd & Leeds seems strangely appropriate for someone who likes Mana and Fraim ;-)

I have the smallest table which supports one black box up to 18lbs in weight.

I paid £100.00 for it second hand. The new price is £239.00.

If it goes wrong, I will stick it under the DVD or even sell it, but it has in all fairness improved my CD3.5 considerably.
