fc or hicap for CD5?

Posted by: Theo on 16 August 2003

A Flat cap-2 or a hicap for my CD 5 that is the question.
For more than one year I could resist the upgrade virus, but now it strikes again.
Yesterday I got a fc2 and a hicap to try it out at my home.
Now the FC2 is in charge. First impressions: more space, more defined bass and a smoother treble. I'm not sure for the dynamics. It gives a more relaxed sound.

Will be continued.

The Hicap certainly sound better, but have you considered the CDX2? I've just done the dem yesterday:

Your description of the sound with the FC sounds exactly on the money. I put a refurbished HiCap on my CD5 and the improvement was astonishing. I didn't bother investigating a FCap but if I had, I might well have stopped there. Any XPS on your CD5 will be a significant improvement and since you have both FCap and HiCap to compare, you're defenitely going to make the right choice.

Yes the CDX2 would be worth it. But you seem committed to going the CD5/XPS route. You can't go wrong.

Can a CD5 take an XPS? Or have I misread this thread?

I use XPS as shorthand for (any) external power supply. Could be confusing, granted.

Hicap

Yesterday i replaced the flatcap for a hicap. Impressions. More highs, deeper en better defined bass, a little bit more space en much, much more details. But where is the music? It seems I'm listening tot detailed sound, not music any more. Is the timing gone?
To be continued.

Do you know if this is a used/run in HiCap? If it's been running for less that 2 weeks it will sound strange. I found it took a month for my refurbished box to settle down. The result was very good, but getting there had a lot of ups and downs.

Hope that's of some help. If the HiCap is well run in, give it a day to warm up and have a long listen after that.

Cheers

Hi,
as a result of an impending upgrade to a CDX2 i did a little experimenting with my CD 3.5, which used to be hi-capped. I swapped between the hi-cap and a flat-cap (which was powering my NAC102 pre). The differance from going from a hi-cap down to a flat-cap was distinctive. But one thing I did notice was that having to switch the electrics off even for a few minutes whilst plugging/unplugging leads etc was the sound generally dropped in quality.
My point is power one supply up and give it as long as you dare before making any comparisons - Naim kit is notorious for this IMO - I mean thats why they put most of the on/off switches on the back, isn't it?
In answer to your question If you buy a Hi-cap (new or s/h) you will use it for years.
I would take a hi-cap over a flat-cap in your situation because it will continue to improve as its left switched on beyond that of the f/c.

Hicap part 2

The Hicap is now in my system for two days and things are improving. Especially in the timing department. Where it was first a little bit uneven and dynamic overblown. I'm listening to music again.
Maybe it will improve further in a subtle way. Still waiting for more.

When my HiCap came along, my speakers had to be pulled out a long way from the wall. I never knew there was so much in them!

Hi all,

Considering add a FC to power the CD and preamp, just wondering will it be same for the FC only power CD, or power both CD and Preamp??

and for the poweramp, will it be better off from not powering the premap??

Thx all naim friends

Yes, the Flatcap is Naim's dual power supply, i.e. it actually contains two supply, one for your pre-amp, one for the CDP.

Yes.
