Say it ain't so

The first part of this article is quite disheartening. Perhaps the independents will pick up where EMI leaves off?

"Core classical recordings no longer make commercial sense. It's the end of a glorious era."

This is depressing. I assume "core" means both symphony and opera.

How come the little independents can apparently make a go of it, while the majors cannot?

Perhaps it's a blessing in disguise. Maybe recording and production costs are low (economical) enough for an orchestra and artists to branch out on their own and not be dictated by the majors.

Could there also be opportunities here? I know that I would certainly purchase some of the concerts I've been to had they been available on CD. Look at the live recordings of the LSO Shostakovich Nr 11 (ok, so I didn't go to this one, but I have the CD.) Besides, it could help with the dwindling coffers of those struggling and underfunded performing arts.
