electrics, DIY!

Bought a copy of HIFI World this weekend and at the back is a DIY section.

He makes an electrical lead, it all looks resonably straight forward and will probably have no dicernable effect but thought as maplins is just up the road I would have a go.

Any Advice, he says the final figures is 18amps or something, (I don't have the mag at the mo) he takes 6 blue wires at 3 amps each and 6 brown wires at 3 amps and one thicker earth, solders the lot and puts a sheath over the top, sounds straight forward, provided I wired it correctly and plugged into my CDi, could anything go wrong for the old player?

It is worth noting that 6 x NAP135s in total draw about one ampre at idle.

This goes up to about 3 to 4 ampres at above normal listening volume.

They are configured with a 4 ampre fuse that is to allow for filling 2 x 15,000 micro farad capacitors at switch on.

If we assume that the power requirement are in the order of three ampres at maximum volume then six NAP-135s will use 18 ampres.

Having said all that the for ONE amplifier the the 18 ampre cable you have in mind would be "cracking a nut with a sledge hammer".

Anyway you wall socket is probably protected with a 15 ampre fuse or circuit breaker.

If you have some spare time open up your amplifier and inspect the size of the cable as fitted by NAIM to connect the AC socket to the transformer and then speculate on the size of the wire used in the primary winding used in the transformer.

This will give you some guidance as to the requirements to power a NAIM amplifier, in essence the mains cable would need to be larger than this.

I found that a 45amp (10sq.mm) spur made a sizeable difference to an old arcam CD player & NAIT2.

I made one. I couldn't get the right cable so I have twinned three runs of brown and blue and one run of thicker earth. All soldered. I havn't tried it yet but its plugged in and so far all seems well. Will post results.

There was method in my madness, I needed a longer run of cable to get the CDi plugged in a seperate plug from everything else. Instead of just buying one i thought I would ave a go at making one. Its very easy.
