lp12 advice

Posted by: Ian Preston on 07 September 2003

Im looking at a older lp12 which is available here. It is pre-vahalla with a Grace 707 arm and supex cartridge. Its offered for the equivalent of around 250UKP ($400US). I will have to gamble a bit though as I will have to purchase it unseen. The owner is saying that its condition is excellent.
It was serviced about three years ago when the supex was re-tipped.
I understand that this was a classic combination of its time.
I could almost get the same for my current table which is a Linn axis/basik/golring.
Assuming the deck is o.k how would it compare to the axis?

Agreed - the LP12 should be much more exciting to listen to than the axis.

Ian. You are mad if you are considering buying an LP12 sight unseen. Straight, but there it is. Unless its from a reputable dealer, that is.

If there's any bearing trouble, a cirkus kit is a mere snip at $1350-odd, and then there's the question of the arm - the Grace is not exactly brilliant. No PSU? Oh deary me - stick it out for a good one - they come up from time to time if you're patient, and expect to pay circa $1500 as ballpark for an LP12/Val/Ittok. Cheaper in the long run by far, loads more excitement and music overall.

There's my 2p. Smile

Hi
I bought an LP12 with exactly the same spec as yours (Grace and Supex as well) and for £250 its got to be a bargain. Mines sounds absolutely wonderful and the upgrade possibilities are obvious, go for it after checking it out if you can but if you can't then I would certainly risk it.

Hello,

Do you know the owner? If you do not, then by all means check the table out first. From the description the table would be at least 20 years old (purchase price for a new basic LP12 table without arm is still about the same). Has the LP12 been regularly serviced? It may require some work, but should be better than the Axis. Don't sell the Axis until after you get the LP12.

Cheers,
