I wasn't sure where to put this (Padded Cell? Not on this Forum at all?), but it is a kit-related note and I figure folks here may use a DVD player in a second, AV-type system.
So...
I got the Toshiba SD-2300 and the DVD playback is very good - particularly at this price point ($185!!!). But it was shite on CD playback.
Until...
...I found a setting in the Audio section of the setup menu. Turns out the thing has adjustable compression (!) and the default is that the compression is turned on. This is done so dialog on DVDs will be audible even at lower listening levels. Has to compress to compensate for the ultra wide dynamic range
Anyway, turning the compression off make a huge difference. Not only is it more dynamic, but the timing is improved to move it from the 'Sonic Wallpaper' category to the 'I'm Stuck Listening to Music and Don't Wanna Stop' category. Doesn't time and slam like a Naim player, but definitely preferable this way. Do this now if your DVD player has such an adjustment.
And yes - the Toshiba sounds better with the display turned off. More tuneful and better tone to instruments.

Richard -
Thank you for asking. And Yes - I was in Harrogate for 2 1/2 weeks, and London, Belfast and Dublin for a few days each. Quite a trip - my first time in the UK. I can't wait to go back
I didn't report because my only audio experience was very negative and I didn't feel like being negative. The short version is that I visited Sound Organization in York and all dems failed to impress - including the 5-series AND the top range Linn system (CD12, Klimaxes or whatever they are called). I've heard Bose Wave Radios I would rather listen to. Serious setup issues I suspect, but I dunno.
The UK was fab and I'm sorry time didn't permit meeting anyone. I was working non-stop!!! My fiancée - now my wife - came over for a week and we had a great time.
Must make time to visit the Naim factory on the next trip.

Congrats on your marriage. I hope she's musical - that'll support listening to music and getting upgrades!

Trying to talk wife into accepting a CDS as an anniversary gift, but she's holding out for a vacation....

...she is very musical. Plays the Violin and Piano and used to be a Jazz DJ. She loves swing music and the stereo is on most of the time. She says she wanted a guy with a good-sounding stereo.
Am I a lucky dog or what?!?

Many thanks Greg, just checked my Tosh DVD, AND YES the Audio Compression was
ON,wayway better with it off,and the display
(did'nt realise i could switch if off totally)...
I mean you buy DVDs for the all out audio-movie experience, most decoders/recievers have the night time clipping feature as well
Pointless facility !!!
