Naim Active Sub??

Posted by: Justin on 10 October 2003

I'm sorry if this has already been covered. But a friend of mine was looking through the most recent Spring newsletter and right there in page 11 there is a picture of a subwoofer (called the "Active") under one of the system arrangements.

What gives. Is Naim making an active subwoofer. If so, I'm TOTALLY on board.

Heh, appears to be that way, doesn't it. Maybe they could just give us a teeny eeny weeny little passive hint though :-)

Just a thought.

And oh yeah, I'd be TOTALLY on board as well.

Cheers

John.. :-)

Vote me in aswell.

The biggest problem is all the "wait & see", my beard will have turned white by the time they get the Home Cinema side of things on the market.

I mean right now we are waiting for:
- DVD Player
- Possible DVD-A & SACD upgrades for above
- VS1 video switcher / scaler
- Active sub-woofer

Thats a lot of potential revenue Naim is going to lose if it does'nt get it's act together. There are other respected audio companies such as Meridian, Mark levinson, Linn, Krell, B&W & so on who will get my pennies instead soon.

Fully agree with Geoffp - while naim are good at service once product are in the market, they are pretty weak at:
a) delivering product when they say they will
b) keeping consumers informed about timings

I could at least accept delays, if only they would tell us.

I cannt even begin to recall how long we have been waiting for the VS1

Surely you would'nt prefer Naim to bring something to the market that was'nt ready yet. A number of other manufacturers use magazine reviewers and their customers as guinea pigs bringing out mark2s etc a few weeks after they go on sale or get reviewed. That's OK if you haven't bought it but a bit of a bugger if you were first in the queue then have to return unit for upgrade or in the case of speakers buy the revised tweeters etc. Naim take care of their customers and on the whole they only release new products when their ready.

The operative words are "bring to the market". The problem is Naim announced items (eg VS1 and active sub) in print. If they were'nt anywhere near ready why publish and have people hanging on for them.
The VS1 is a particular example. that was announced when the AV2 came out and that was more than 18 months ago.
I accept it is nice to have a "perfect" product before bringing it to market but the speed at which advance is happening in all aspects of media means you could be forever holding off just to add the latest innovation.
On the flip side innovation is a fact of life for the consumer aswell these days. When you buy something with electronics in it you are accepting a package on sale "today" and choosing it because it comes closest to what you want. If a newer faster better version is announced tomorrow tough shit. You have to accept what you bought and live with it or start saving to replace it.
Of course when you do replace or "üpgrade" you are at risk of the same happening again.

So Geoff your'e saying that you would be quite happy to buy an expensive but poor sounding piece of kit from Naim if you could buy it today.Confused

Also it's got nothing to do with innovation but the sound quality that results from this innovation. The japanese and some other manufacturers (who should know better) might be happy to be first to market with a new Innovation but repeat sales and a satisfied customer results from getting the sound quality right.IMHO.

I would assume that getting it right is taking a lot longer than they first thought. This could be because of factors outwith their control. Suppliers making changes to key components etc. Perhaps an administrator could elucidate further. Naim are a company who put sound quality first and foremost and I for one would like it to remain that way.

I obviously would'nt buy an expensive but poor sounding piece of kit from anybody. When I said "and choosing it because it comes closest to what you want" I was implying that I had used some method to determine it delivered what I wanted. In the case of a piece of HiFi kit the method would be a serious demo of the equipment and comparison with other alternatives from other HiFi equipment suppliers before choosing.

I am NOT saying that Naim is wrong to try their best to deliver excellent sounding equipment,it is also my sincere desire that Naim remain a company who put sound quality first, but it's a tough world full of aggressive competition who are very good at what they do.
