mp3HD

This could be interesting considering that mp3 is the only format that most people recognise.

I still think I'll stick with flac; I've invested to much time ripping to one lossless format to think about another.

Yes that is interesting, but I will echo DaveBK and add ALAC, AIFF, WAVE to that !

By the way, Dave, how is Logic coming along? Any good tracks yet ? ( you can post reply on the old thread )

MP3HD,... the name sounds odd, like " Tall Dwarf " or " Massive Midget "

What's 'better than shit'?
It is lossless. It's similar to WavPack Hybrid, or MPEG4-SLS (although I don't think there is any software available for that yet).

I can see a possible advantage if, like many people you keep two copies of your digital music, one in lossless (e.g. FLAC) for your computer/streamer/whatever, and one in lossy (e.g. MP3) for your portable.
mp3HD combines these two and avoids having to keep stuff in sync. Problem is that it wastes space if you copy the mp3HD to a portable, where it only plays the lossy MP3 portion. If syncing software were made available so that the lossy MP3 portion could be automatically stripped out alone when copying to a portable, then this would be ideal. However, in that case, you might as well design the software to maintain a library of music in dual format (FLAC/MP3), and copy the MP3 when syncing to a portable, but play the FLAC otherwise. Ergo, it's a neat idea, but not *quite* there, IMO.

I use media monkey, which encodes my FLAC files to 192kb MP3 on the fly to my ipod. Its genius.

Foobar will convert FLAC to anything.... basically instantly.

When I convert to WAV to burn a CD for the car, it only takes about 3-5 seconds to convert an entire album.

There is no need for another lossless codec, unless it is applicable for a very specific need.

I also think this is positive, I don't care at all about another lossless format but I think a lossless MP3 format can contribute to develop lossless music downloads market and that's good.
