N Vi Interconnects
Posted by: Neil Gilbert on 28 October 2006
Anyone know which interconnects come with the N-vi.
I will be using mine with a 52/300 for the fronts, and looking at the manual on screen I appear to need a 180 5 pin din from the N vi to the 52.
Does this come in the box?
How could I tell if I already have one? I still have several Naim interconnects I have accumulated over the years.
Thanks
Neil

The n-Vi comes bare nekkid.
As you say you need a 180/5-pin to 180/5-pin. These are 180 degree DIN's. Chord do these as do many others. Interconnects also do this, SNAIC's don't.

Thanks for the info.
Pretty poor that I cannot use such an item within the context of an all Naim system without further expense.

Given that its primary use is typically in a standalone context, with built-in front-channel amplification, this shouldn't be so unusual.

It is difficult to argue with that logic.
However I can't help feeling that when you have already shelled out £13k on pre amp, power amp and N vi that a cable be provided. Probably one for the dealer to address.

Took delivery of the N Vi today.
Tried to connect my projector via component but was confronted by BNC connectors. Not much help when you have phonos. Are you meant to use adaptors?
Can you actually use the N Vi as a CD player through my 52/300 or does it always go through the N Vi. At the moment the volume control on the N Vi remote controls both pre amp and N Vi and I have not worked out how to by pass it.
Thanks

I also can't work out how to wire those speaker terminals it came with.

I normally fit all my own kit, means the dealer owes me favours elsewhere.
I did not expect BNC connections to my projector and I expected my existing speaker terminals to fit into the back of the N Vi, after all, they did when I had the AV2. I cannot see how you wire those two prong plugs that came with it and a warning on the back of the N Vi suggests I use nothing else.
To be fair, my dealer did offer to fit it, so I will get him in.

-You will need to solder the speaker cable to the pins.
-yes you will need BNC->PHONO adapters
-Yes you can use it as a CD player through the 52.
If you are routing front left/right through 52/300 via 5:5 interconect, you need a unity gain modification on you 52. Do you have this?
If you do have this mod, the volume change on the 52 will be irrelivant as volume is controlled from the n-Vi

When you'll get your Hi-line, you will have an extra din5 to din5, use it for the N-Vi....
As for speaker bananas, you can use your old one if you remove the box and gently bend the cable.

Think you'll find one of your existing leads should sort you out on this.
Guessing that if you have a 52/300 you probably have a cd player that'll outperform the nVi on cd playback.... however, of you want to listen to Floyd in Pro-Logic II Music mode, give it a try.
Of course, if your system is based on vinyl, like mine, you could get by with this, but shelling out on even a humble CD5X will probably yield better results
Your nVi remote has 2 volume controls side by side - one for your preamp, one for the nVi.... (marked AV) you should hook your nVi into your preamp's AV input which needs to be set to unity gain.
BNC's are there as they are better quality - personally I'd use a dedicated BNC-RCA component cable... but if you really don't feel like shelling out on a fresh run, or reterminating your existing cable you could always buy 3 adapters for the price of a couple of pints
Maybe you should let your dealer do his job, part of his margin as set by Naim will be based on coming out to you to install and set up your kit.
Better to pay full price and get full service

Neil,
The AV2 comes with a Naim 180/5-pin DIN to 180/5-pin DIN Interconnect Cable for connecting the AV2 to a Naim Preamplifier.
This is the Cable you should order from your dealer.
Might as well get the real thing.
When connecting the AV2 or n-Vi to a Naim Preamplifier you should activate the unity-gain feature on the AV Input of the pre-amp.
Hope this helps

Thanks for all the advice.
I did find a 180 cable and this is fine.
I have 10 metres of good quality cable running through the roof space to my projector and not keen to change this.
I use LP12 predominantly and will use the N Vi for occasional CDs.
I am unable to use unity gain as I have a 52. I guess I just turn the preamp volume to 12.00 on the 52 and increase volume on the N Vi. I cannot see any way to bypass the N Vi preamp.
Still can't see how you wire those speaker terminals.

your 52 can be sent back to naim for a unity gain upgrade (i did it with mine)
you will however lose a tape input
a very worthwile upgrade

You won't be able to bypass the nVi volume control, because it's designed to work with a unity gain input...
as Neil says, get the mod done, it'll be worth it.

Thanks again.
Everything is now working but only had a chance to test the sound, not realy had a good listen.
Does the unity gain mod give me anything other than convenience. I assume the potential quality of CD playback will always be governed by the N vi preamp.
