Monstrous and absurd cd

Posted by: mongo on 05 February 2010

On a certain auction site I have been searching for some Moody Blues cd's that are not 're-mastered', and hence buggered, to replace ones I've recently bought that are. I'ts a pain too btw.

But to the point of this post.

I found a fellow in the US who is asking £312 (no mistake) for an MFSL 24-karat gold cd of 'Every Good Boy..'

Is there something I'm missing or is this as repulsive as I think?

Ah the pleasure of a capitalist homeland.
If someone will pay it, that's what it is worth, I'm afraid.

Yes it's repulsive, unless I have 2 copies then that sounds like a good price to me. Winker Smile

You are also assuming the MFSL isn't in your word "buggered".

Just keep looking and you will find one nearer £30 possibly even less.

Hi BH.

I agree that if some one will pay it ...etc.., I'm just stunned by the mans gall; barefaced mega greed imo.

Surely you would be too much of a gent to try and get such a price? Smile

I get the impression from this forum that it's safe to buy the mfsl's sq wise. Is that not always the case?

Buggered is a fine word from my area. It indicates something is broken, rubbish, trash, not fit for purpose, cheap, shoddy, damaged and not least, all of the above and irritating to boot. Versatile, I think. And certainly applicable to the awful MB remasters I foolishly bought.

I'm going to ritually set fire to them and jump up and down on them. Or perhaps that should be the other way around?

Absolutely £300 for cash! Winker Smile MODS I am jesting.

My comment about SQ on MFSL is that they might have been tampered(re mixed or whatever) with when MSFLed.

I do have one MFSL that glitches so not always a guarantee of quality.

Miles should be able to comment , as he must have ALL of MSFLs output by now.

I was about to say I'm fine with buggered, but thought that may be misconstrued and personally untrue. Instead I'll say I understand your usage of the word, nearly always used in these parts for something that's broken.

With the exception of Seventh Sojourn you can find most Moody Mofi's still at a reasonable price. You will struggle to find Seventh for under $100 in decent condition.

The sound quality of all of them is just amazing.

One of my sources has it on sale for $70, not cheap but better than the above. Smile

I'm pleased to hear that, so I'll certainly keep looking.

In the meantime does anyone know when these albums were re-mastered so that i can look for earlier pressings?

I also have a similar problem with the Rush re-masters, (though no where near as crushed as the MB's), for instance Permanent Waves's 'Spirit of Radio' has no range or kick at all.

I've found a claimed non re-master of PW in the US that I've ordered but the rest are proving a struggle.

Also of course I don't want to end up with multiple copies of two dozen albums and I'm reluctant to sell on as they're tat.

Any suggestions gleefully received.

Paul.

For the Rush discs Paul you might want to look at getting the Japanese 1st pressing and they are going to cost you. Some people like the very early WG Atomic pressings (they have a red and silver/grey design or Green face).

I like the MFSL of Moving Pic and also have Signals as a MFSL which is ok.

Send mean email at m.leemacpherson@tesco.net and I can help you in the right direction.

Agree with Ewen, for Rush you got plenty to pic from. I have the MoFi's and some of the WG Atomics and JPN 1st pressings.

Most of the JPN 1st pressings are extremely expensive but I find the Atomics just as good.

Could you please explain WG Atomics?
What should one search for?

Is there a specific resource or area to search for these?

EDIT:
OK I finally made Google and E-Bay bend to my will.

West German Mercury Labels with an Atomic logo in the centre area?

This is one.

There are some Shirley Collins records that fetch stupid prices and although I can understand a desire to own everything and anything with Shirley's name on it - I do not like this. To me it means that some of the most wonderful music ever to come from these fair isles is denied to many who would love to hear it - I see a good thing coming in the shape of downloads is that Shirley can make her music available to those interested for a sensible amount. Shirley, of course, gets nothing from these rip off merchants who pedal 1978's For As Many As Will for an arm and leg.

This applies to other artists too.

Of course, if somebody wants to buy an original vinyl pressing with a misspelt title for a ridiculous sum then that's another matter

Many of the early WG CDs are named after their design or label - aside from Atomics, Vertigos are very collectable too.

Is it a case of just making sure of "Made in WG by xxxx" on the CD or do they have a special id numbers.

It takes some experience to recognize them by their spine or catalogue number, most sellers (e.g. e-bay) will refer to them as e.g. Atomics or Vertigos.

This is the slippery slope H. Big Grin

But worth it, the differences can be better than a kit upgrade.

For the Rush discs I thoroughly recommend the West German Atomics. The only one I've splashed out on is Moving Pictures which I think is their best elpee. I got the MOFI.

MOFI is not a guarantee, I recently compared the UK EMI Harvest copy of Floyd's "The Wall" to the MOFI, I much prefer the former. Likewise the Japanese black label DSOTM I prefer to the MOFI and it's cheaper.

Agree,

... for DSOTM my ranking would be:
1. Black Triangle
2. Blackface
3. MoFi
... for Wall I prefer as well the German or JPN Blackface over the MoFi.
... for WYWH the 35DP still eludes me, but my go to copy is the Mastersound.
