picture of system

Here is a picture of my system (less the right speaker). The room is a full 30 by 20 ft with 18 ft cathedral ceiling. The speakers are linn 5140 and thats the 5150 subwoofer in the corner. My LP12 with ekos/rega exact cartridge is on the right stand with a supercap on the bottom. The left stand is BASE with from the top:82/cdx/nat 01/250. This is the best I could get for now as to picture size and quality and still to keep it under 30KBs. Feedback? david.

David,
I am envious of your room dimensions.
You asked for some comments, so here are mine
Move the LP12 and electronics further away or in a null zone (bass pressure wise) in the room? I don't think LP12 near a sub is good.
I think having the power supplies/amps (XPS or SCap, 01 PST and 250) on it's own three tier stand would bring benefits. After all you do have the space.
Have you thought of getting some Mana for your Linn? No Linn is complete without one.
regards
Dev

Dev, I thought you had a Well-Tempered table--could this be a sideways remark?

P.S. David F.--Ears Nova has Fraim on demonstration as of last week. In your (what looks to be) acoustically-live room, though, it's possible that the BASE works quite well at removing frequencies that might set it ringing...dunno.

thanks for all the comments. You cannot see it in the picture, but a haevy oriental rug covers more than half of the room and there is alot of upholstered furniture so that the room is not as live as one might think. The flooring is wood parquet on top of a cement floor so that the transmission of vibrations is minimized- still I realize that having the tt and equipment so close to the sub is a potential problem. I cannot move the racks further away from the sub without having them in front of a large window- which would expose them to the sun as well as to prying eyes. I could move the sub to the other side near the right speaker, but my interconnect doesn`t reach. So for now, the stuff stays put.
Sproggle, I haven`t ever compared the rega exact to the other cartridges that you mentioned. My dealer simply told me that unless I moved to an expensive MC, the exact would be the best choice. Since I trust my dealer, I went with the exact.
I will try to send some other room pictures soon. david.

Additionally, LP12 might be better suited to installation on left of rack - arm cable doesn't pass above mains leads, and heads straight in to BNC's...
Sub out of the corners.
Rico - all your base are belong to us.

Hi Davidf
I see you have an old 250, do you want to sell it. I'm ideally after one of 1983/84 vintage to match my current one so that I may go active.

I respectfully disagree with rico and james re sub position. I found that my sub works best in the corner where it is. I originally had it between my 5140 speakers- it did not work as well. I have read several publications that also emphasize how subs usually work best in a corner where the room itself helps to transmit the low frequencies. I have tried it both ways- corner works best.
timbo, my old style 250 is not for sale, sorry.
lance, if you will notice in the left hand corner of the picture is part of a round table. I have 2 big chairs on the other side of this table. This is my listening position when I really want to get into listening. These chairs are about 9 ft from the front of the speakers and the speakers are about 9 ft from each other. There are other listening spots in the room including 2 sofas and another comfy chair that are 12 to twenty ft from the speakers. More for casual listening.
Thanks for all the advice. david.

Davidf,
If you are looking at buying some bigger loudspeakers, such as the NBLs, I would suggest that you sell the 5140 and 5150 NOW!
Linn is about to replace the 5140 with the Espek. This is likely to reduce the second hand value of the 5140.
Alternatively, if you happy with the Linn loudspeaker combination and don't envisage upgrading then don't worry.

as was suggested, I moved my naim components and lp12 about 3 ft to the left and therefore further away from my sub in the corner. The system sounds better! But, now my components are partially exposed to sunlight coming through a window (see initial post to check the picture). The sun comes through for a few hours a day. Can the sunlight or the addtional heat generated do any damage to my equipment? If so, would a reasonable solution be to buy a drape or use a towel to cover the equipment during the daylight hours? I don`t want to move the components back to the corner close to the sub. Thanks in advance. david.
