Is my laptop a spam mailer?

I've always been careful about computer security. Currently using Norton (subs up to date) on my laptop.
Never knowingly open spam - have rarely opened things which appear to be from friends, or look like they might be a reply to something I have recently sent. Only twice in the last 2 years have these not been what I expect.
Much to my surprise this morning I went into my Spam Folder (Yahoo Mail) to check the headers for anything that ought not to be there and delete the rest, when to my surprise I saw one for viagra which apparently emanated from my email address!
Ran full Norton systems check - as usual the only thing was a "low risk" tracking cookie (probably from Amazon) which appears and is removed every time.
Has my PC laptop been taken over as a spam mailer? If so, how do I get rid of the offending piece of software? I don't really want to have to go to the hassle of reformating and reintalling Windoze Vista unless I have to.
