Gas supply problem - this is going to be hell

Posted by: Stuart M on 17 August 2006

Well after living at my new place for two years all of a sudden the central heating stops working - recently serviced, can hear pump turning, sparks going so go and look at the meter - it's going round (even when central heating is off!)

Now there are three meters next to each other with house numbers written on as the 3 properties are arranged around a courtyard.

Opening them all I discover one has been fitted with key meter and it's run out of credit, no knock on my neighbours doors (we get on v well) and after lots of messing around discover

I've (in No 2) have been paying No 1's bill.

No 3 has been paying for No 1 but had a key meter fitted and lost it means I have only cold water only here as he's lost the key

No 1 should be paying for No 3 but despite repeated contact with British Gas keep being told that they owe nothing so have not paid a thing for two years.

Everyone is with different energy companies, properties are 3,2,1 bedroom so bills should be proportionally different and with prices a nasty financial mess to sort.

To sort this out will be hell on earth.
Bets please how long to you think.

My guess: 2years and 3 months

Thanks for the idea Steve, good job I'm keeping this log it could prove useful.

Anyway there systems are up and after being told the pay meter does not exist I managed to get through to someone who again took all the details (it seems there customer system does not keep track of past calls so I have to explain it all again) and now on hold while they talk to 'managemnent'

Decided to call EDF today and stop paying - well if my gas account gets a paymeter fited that makes another property get a key meter and that will force them to do something.

Contact EDF and wow they were so helpful. They could not sort it out but explained according to TRANSCO there is only one property (not 3 registered to the address). Only one of the meter numbers I gave is in the TRANSCO database but TRANSCO does have 2 other meters registered to the address (that after looking at the meters are not pysically there). Thier best guess is that the meters were replaced/relabeled before I moved in but not registered.

Lots of on hold and refered around a lot but promissed a call back tomorrow. And, now I am impressed, I was given the name of who I was talking to, the manager who said they would chase it trough and a direct phone number Eek so no more call centre Winker

I hope.....

Good luck with EDF...

In shock Eek EDF have come through with shining colours. The wonderful Pat called me back today, unfortunately as I was in meetings through the day but she left a message and kept trying.

Unfortunately because of the different suppliers and all the rest she told me 'I'm not going to lie, it's a mess and will probably take ages to sort out', gave me a pile of background but her prime concern was to stop my supply being interrupted, and I think bending a rule has, after checking it was convenient, arranged for TRANSCO to remove the key meter next Tuesday. Also gave me some hints on what to do/not to do when they get here and also real people (her and her manger, including her working hours) to call if TRANSCO give me problems.

Considering the bad things I've heard about EDF customer service from several people I am gob smacked that I got Naim level of service. After almost 2 weeks of talking to British Gas , Pat from EDF has, within 24 hours, sorted out my biggest problem, I think I'm in love Razz. Naim style service from EDF!

Excellent - it looks as if you have stumbled across some individuals within EDF that care.

If all goes well I've decided I will write and thank, Pat + her Manager as thier performace has been at Naim Level.

Silly I know as it's BASIC customer service BUT so many of our institutions do not give it.
Sorry but 40 mins on hold on an 0870 (National call charge) or 0845 (local) are a rip off. Or profit from customer suffering.

An 0800 number (well at least they try to be free).

Outsourcing to India, technically I have no objection - it's a service. Initially outsourced companies gave better and cheaper service. Now what do we get as everyone is doing it. Crap, the quality of service has gone through the floor (They have no idea of the UK, I have been accused of being drunk (I was at work!) been cut off - off script, promissed things would happen - they didn't. Lied to - guess half off this if the change to "performance related and targets" rather than a "service related" company. I.e no non standard operation can be done, I.e. phoned for weeks, until I talked to someone in the UK.
Either empower your outsourced staff OR let them refer.

Early outsourcers had the advantage as they had access to a pool of high quality and unemployed resource (if they can keep their staff) they are still good. But in the rush for cash and cheap service the quality of service was lost. I will be cancelling at least 3 accounts of mine, as when I lost my wallet and hit a problem all I can is EVERY offshore service managed to mess something up (Lloyds bank - because I had lost my privilege (or speak to a human number) with my wallet were totally useless. (You not got the number - you not got the money - type of display) IT's NOT WORKING.

Market forces – crap conservative rubbish.
BUT
Pissed off consumers who will not pay for water, gas, electricity, council tax (paid by parking fines – and I don’t even drive), 16 billion proposed for ID card against terrorism (Zero proof that this could prevent anything) but as a UK citizen this is my view – “Your papers sir” – we fought 2 world wars to avoid this. Protect our borders (Ok difficult with the EU) BUT our freedom must be protected (and I say this knowing that that we are NOT a democracy but a monarchy) so ultimately my appeal is to the Queen rather than the prime minister.
