Xerxes troubleshooting help sought

Posted by: Bob Edwards on 04 June 2003

Hi all.

I recently picked up a used (duh!) Roksan Xerxes for my office system. It arrived in very good cosmetic condition and was packed very well. I today received the SME IV arm I had acquired for it. So I installed a cartridge, mounted the arm, put the Xerxes together, turned on the power supply, and nothing happened. The power supply light comes on but the motor does not turn.

I have removed the cover from the power supply and don't see any obviously fried components. I have not yet tried to remove the baseboard to check all the motor wiring, but will do that later.

Question: Has anyone else experienced the same and what was it? Any tricky parts I should check?

Thanks in advance.

try to spin the motor with your fingers then turn the power on

I would add that you should touch the motor spindle why it is on and see if it is vibrating. Check to see if the motor is experiencing a malfunction. You should be able to spin it easily, though it should feel a tiny bit like a stepped volume pot (the magnets).

Bob,
Is it an original Xerxes with the Class A XPS 2 P/S?
They run very hot,so it could just be a dry joint on one of the large ceramic resistors, although the Transistors/IC's can fail.
If your go to the Vinyl Engine, there is a download for the XPS 2 on how to fix them,I managed to get two of my three supplys working with the help of this.

Cheers,
Paul.

Thanks all.

The motor, when the supply is turned on, does feel like it is cogging ever so slightly--it is definitely trying to move but cannot.

Tried starting the platter by hand, that doesn't work. All the motor wires appear OK. Looks like I either need a new motor or something is wrong with the supply.

Anyone tried the Origin Live DC motor with the Xerxes?

Best,

Bob

See reply a couple of weeks back to your original post.

Does the motor run when the belt is undone? If so, you might want to level the motor and platter simultaneously - my roksan had occasional start problem which was cured by levelling.
