Cannot stream with Qute

Posted by: Bruce Woodhouse on 29 September 2010

My Qute is now connected to my router. It appears in the network connections on the PC. I have enabled file sharing in Windows Media to the device. I have enabled media sharing in Windows Firewall. The Qute can 'see' the media library and scroll through it (the files are in iTunes libraries) but when a track is selected it gives me a 'Cannot stream' error.

Help!

Probably need a UPnP server on the PC - I'm not a Windows fan but I think Media player can operate as one - or Asset / Twonky ?

Using Media Player

I have a setting on my router (linksys) "Enable UPnP" - honestly speaking no idea what it does, but it is on. Another reason could be firewall - there are a lot of special ports involved, which must be opened. Or unsupported file format - in which format are the files in iTunes?

Odd I know, but I did actually follow them. It told me that the Windows Firewall would be set
automatically. As for opening various Ports, you have just gone beyond my comfort zone.

Presumably if it was a Firewall issue the
Qute would not be visible on the PC or be able
to view and scroll through the library. Similarly the files would not play in WMP if the format was a problem?

The files are bog standard iTunes rips.

MP3, AAC, ALAC, AIFF, ... ? I'd try with a MP3 file first - this must be supported. I'm not sure, which of the other apple formats are supported, but I know that FLAC and WAV are supported. Unfortunately, iTunes does not support them (directly).

Sorted. It is a file format/DRM issue. Only certain files will play through Windows Media Player from my iTunes folders (which are AAC).

Anyone recomend a simple iTunes compatible UPnP player? The Qute manual gives the example of Allegro Media Server. Any reason not to go with this?

Do note that there also seems to be an issue with Windows Media Player v12 and UPnP (in general, device-independent).

Hi,

Try Asset by dbpoweramp (www.dbpoweramp.com). Or foobar with uPnP extensions.

Both are available for free.
