NAC52 power supply question

Posted by: Steve Hall on 22 January 2002

Hi,

I've been offered an old (SN 697xx) NAC52 in combination with a nearly new SuperCap for £3000.

Now, a NAC52 of 697xx vintage is a NAC52 which should come with a 52PS. So im a little confused.

Is this a valid thing to do, does it mean the NAC52 is modified, or are they completely incompatable?

HELP! smile

The 52 can be used with the 52PS or with a Supercap. Furthermore, Naim can upgrade the original 52PS to a Supercap (unlike the CDS PS, which cant evolve into a PSX). This might have been whats happened? In which case its essentially like having a new supercap depending on the date of the upgrade. I have a 52PS that was upgraded in 1997 to supercap and, although the SN dates it from 1991, the back panel all state Supercap etc.

Hope this helps

So, if the vintage 52 is ok with a new Supercap, then what should I have done with the NAC52?

Is servicing a preamp as needed as a powersupply/poweramp?

Presumably, at this age, its worth a once over by Naim techies?

Hi Steve,

From your description it sounds like the prior owner had the 52PS upgraded into a supercap, so that part of the system is probably OK.

If I were in your shoes I'd definately send in the control unit to Naim to have it checked out and any off-spec parts serviced. A friend of mine had an older vintage 52 that was "off song" by comparison to an 82. He sent it in and found that many parts needed replacing. Once serviced it performed great.

If the 52PS was upgraded there is a good chance the 52 was serviced at the same time.

Supercap is a very valid upgrade for the 52, apparently.

Naim's Service dept will know, although they may be a little busy at the moment as Mark Ragget is off ill at the moment.

cheers, Martin

P.S. Does it have a black Burndy? This is also worthwhile.

Nope, unfortuantly, its grey - already asked.

That will be next on my shopping list once the wife has recovered from the shock wink
