Rega 'Ara' on Nait-2

Posted by: Alco on 29 December 2002

Hi guys,

As some of ya may know, I'm still haunting for some suitable speakers for my little ol' Nait-2.
Now, last week I got me a Rega brochure.
I think I'll try the Rega Ara next weekend.

Studying the specs they seem to be a very suitable partner for my needs:
1. They are easy to drive!
2. Have a paper woofer (which I've always prefered to the usual polypropyleen woofers)
3. Seem to have a tight fast bass, without the usual boost/overhang commonly found on budget reflex ported speakers.
4. They're not fussy about placement.
5. They have quite a simple cross-over.
6. Imho, they look georgous, especially in cherry!
7. And last but not least, they're Cheap smile

I spoke to a friend recently. He also uses a Nait-2. He tried the Ara's at home, and said he didn't like them, because they were soundig to bright for his liking, bass light and not open enough.
On the other hand, he was listening to the Ara's in another (way bigger!) room, with another source (Harman-Kardon CD760) and other cable,
so.... I think it's time to judge for myself!

Has anybody heard the Rega Ara on the end of a Naim amp recently ?

Alco,

Did you try the Royd A7 with your nait 2?

Hi Hendrik,
Well, My first experience with the A7's from Royd was about 6 years ago at Rinsma HiFi, on the end of a Nait-2. Imho, it sounded wonderful.
The A7's are fine match with the Nait.

But.... If I'd go for the Royd A7's I'm facing some problems I also have with my Kan's.
The Royd A7's work best when placed close to a backwall. In that position, I have a problem. The speakers need to be placed on each side of an old, big fireplace. That way, the fireplace in between the speakers, is destroying the soundstage/depth.
Also, this time I want speakers that also look decent, preferably in a real (cherr) woodveneer.
Imho, the Royd speakers are one of the most ugly speaker on earth.

So, that's wy I wanna audition the Rega's.

Greetings,
Alco

Alco,

Have a listen to the ELAs as well while you are at the Rega dealers. I had ELAs on a NAIT1 for many years, they sounded great and weren't too fussy about positioning.

cheers

Thanx for the tip Gus,

I'll see if he has some more Rega models in store.
(it's a VERY small store so I guess he won't have all models in da house)

Alco
