Music as satisfying as Suzanne Vega

After you have played all your Suzanne Vega records, what do you play next?

I'd play Rickie Lee Jones - Flying Cowboys or Joni Mitchell - Mingus, or maybe both.

Jeremy..if you haven't got it already, I can recommend Suzanne Vega live at the Montreux Jazz Festival 2004 on DVD.. a superb performance.

Joan As Police Woman - To Survive

You could do worse than starting again and playing them a second time.

As a fan of Vega from 1985 I've found her last two albums rather boring & repetitive. However -
Devon Sproule - Keep Your Silver Shined
Karine Polwart - This Earthly Spell
Kathryn Williams - Leave to Remain
Laura Veirs - Saltbreakers
The Be Good Tanyas - Hello Love
Martha Tilston - Of Milkmaids and Architects
and especially...
Charlie Dore - Sleep All Day / Cuckoo Hill
... a very ignored talent.

Joni Mitchell.
In the early 80's Suzanne Vega was called the new Joni Mitchell.
'Hejira' is my favourite, but any album from the 70's is worth listening to.
'Blue', 'Ladies of the Canyon', 'Court and Spark', 'The Hissing of Summer Lawns' and the very underatted 'For the Roses'.
'Mingus' as mentioned above is also very good, but much more jazz than folk.
There are other albums too.

Hejira is my favourite too, but I do recall playing Mingus straight after Days of Open Hand recently and congratulating myself on my good taste!
For some reason I always find the first musical selection of the evening a bit difficult, but plenty more spring to mind while I'm listening to it.

thanks for all the suggestions - RLJ Flying Cowboys was a great idea, will check out the others from rupert and 5 soon. Joni's great but sometimes brings back too many romantic memories...
actually I saw the Be Good Tanyas last year in San Fran, a very good gig.

...Jeez a thread featuring a veritable cornucopia of fey females (excepting Bonnie Raitt) and no Diccus contribution .....where are ye big man?

For poppy folk; Try The Sundays, Mazzy Star, Everything But the Girl, (early) Joni (of course), Basia Bulat, RLJ (quite varied depending on album), Polly Paulusma (sp.?) (who lives in the thinnest house in England). Moving more towards country than folk: Michelle Shocked, Mary Gauthier, K.D. Lang, Mary C.C., Bonnie Rait. Bat for Lashes moves it along a bit towards avant-garde/modern (others may disagree).
Later Joni gets more jazzy and "strange"?

Just for starters, I suggest:
joni mitchell - for the roses

shawn colvin - a few small repairs

rickie lee jones - the evening of my best day

the story/jonatha brooke - the angel in the house

Enjoy!
