What's up with Linn?

Posted by: Andrew Randle on 28 July 2001

Background
Right now, I've been toying with the idea of building a 2nd system for my flat in London.

I already have a Naim system installed at another place, and need something to keep me sane while I'm away at my flat.

Options that I've considered are Linn mid-range kit, Rega mid-range kit, Cyrus mid-range kit, 2nd hand Naim or Ion Systems.

As I already have Naim kit in an existing system, the possibility of buying a slightly different 2nd system intrigues me.

Conundrum
So off I go to the Linn shop in Harrods, where I'm greeted by a dodgy dimpled tweeter on a pair of Keltiks (that have been like that for months), fed from their CD12/Klimax kit and sounding as magical and musical as a beaten-up AM radio (THIS IS NO EXAGERATION).

Given that this is a high-profile sales opportunity, I would at least expect them to get the set-up right.

So disappointing. Linn seem to take no pride in the capabilities of their equipment anymore. Build quality and look of their kit (particularly the black boxes) are always top-notch, sadly the sonics don't seem to match up.

Ten years ago I heard the LP12 with an LK1/LK280/Kan II combo and the experience was (as Mike Hanson would say) magical. Nowadays, the Linn experience seems to be bleached, reticent and castrated!

Is it me? Has my perceptions changed, or has Linn really taken an unmusical step backwards?

...and now
So, what now? Go for Rega? Go for Cyrus? Or even Audio Note?

It's not all bad for Linn, I do applaud the vast improvement in the Katan over the Tukan.

The final decision will have to wait until after the Hammersmith exhibition - time to pray that Linn will finally show what they can be capable of.

Carl,

Welcome to this list! It's a great community.

To address your points and give a bit more background, I've heard Linn in many contexts recently:

1) Auditioned the Ikemi against the CDX (I bought the CDX).
2) Auditioned the Kairn/Klout against the 72/Hi-Cap/250 (I bought the Naim)
3) Several London shows, Yorkshire shows and the Bristol Show.

Contexts 1 and 2 are also covered in extensive reviews I've written for this forum. See:

and

Thanks for your thoughts, I'm prepared to give Linn one more chance nearer to the time.

the top flight linn system (cd12, keltik speakers?) that i heard at harrods was sort of outside in the sort of open plan area. they were playing a cd that i know well -- a randy crawford --and try as i might -- i couldnt get into the music -- the emotion i am used to just wasnt there. i blamed the location, but half of me suspected that the whole system perhaps wasnt up to it. mind you, i have since heard from a dealer i respect that the cd12 is a very good cd player indeed, when set up correctly.

i am tempted to assume most folk who buy their linn systems from harrods couldnt give a XXXX about sound quality?? dunno....

enjoy

Linn seem to aim for the style-conscious well-heeled market, where people are just not interested in value for money - such as Harrods customers. I could never imagine Naim being seen dead in Harrods - their customers are discerning music lovers!
Linn does not represent value for money, IMHO.
The sound is sweet, smooth and safe. It wouldn't distract you while you were reading your lifestyle magazine, or exchanging small talk with dinner guests, while the Linn played to itself in the background!

Spot on Steven! Maybe a harshly critical email should be sent to Linn. However, I suspect they tend to ignore such things.

In 10 years, they might grow out of it... if they still exist.

Thanks Rob! The trick for me will be finding a dealer that stocks Linn, Rega, Cyrus and maybe Exposure <- now there's another option!

Many years ago I listeded to LP12/nait2/Kan1 - that was my first experience with Linn/Naim. To my ears it simply sounded magical...

In 1997 I went into the shop to buy Linn-CD/pre/power/speakers; I listended to Mimik, Majik, Wakonda, LK100(?), Keilidh, CD3.5, nait3, 90/92 and Credo. I had plenty of time and we tried many combinations: Naim with Keilidh, Linn with CD3.5, Naim with Mimik, Linn with Credos etc. We found it sounded better if Naim and Linn was not mixed, so we compared Naim vs Linn... I was very sorry (because I needed the digital output of the Mimik), but the Naim clearly outperformed Linn. So I bought CD3.5, 90/92 and Credos.

I listeded to a friends Ikemi/Kairn/Klout/Keilidh and I heard details which I didn't notice when I listened to the same CD on my Naim, BUT still I liked my Naim much more - also the Linn was much more expensive. It sounded closed and unfree...

Then I added 2 FlatCaps, an IXO and a second 90 and again: I listeded to a friends CD12/?/Klimax/AV-Speakers (this person had CDS/52/135s/activeSBLs before he changed to the CD12/?/Klimax/AV-Speakers) - but it sounded not as involving as my small Naim...

Maybe I would buy a Classik/Kan as a second system, I also find this mutliroom-stuff comfortable, and of course the LP12 is great! But other Linn-stuff sounds uninteresting for me at the moment...

Is something wrong with me?

Just wondered. Different manufacturers seem to excel at different price points...

It depends John, maybe somewhere around £2k-£4k.

I suspect that these switch mode power supplies have some influence on the musical nature of recent Linn components.

One thing about the Linn nowadays (and I may be wrong about this) is they seem to play consistently between low and high volumes levels. Which, could be a bonus with living in a flat.

The amps I do like though are the LK240s. On that occassion they finally made the Keltiks sound musical.

Given your budget, I'd recommend the following:
Jupiter CD player@ 998 GBP,
Chord Silver Siren interconnect@ 75 GBP x2,
Cursa/Maia pre/power combo@ 996 GBP,
NACA5 at whatever length you require,
and ELA2 speakers@ 750 GBP,
which brings the total to just under three grand.
This is a very musical system!
Then you'd need some equipment supports:
I remember seeing, and hearing the Linn systems at Harrods on QS tables. The tables were the best part of the system, IMHO! A basic 3 shelf would cost you less than 200 quid.
Obviously, there is a Naim 5 series setup you could get at roughly the same price, but this is really a viable alternative.
cool

Andrew,

You are dead right about the Harrods set-up. But it doesn't get better in the dem room. I wandered through recently with my other half. She wanted a small neat solution for her place. The Linn Classic springs to minds, so we setup a dem at Harrods. It was dreadful! The guy muttered that U2's latest was "badly produced". For a laugh I said let's try the CD12 with some Klimax amps. Better, but still no cigar.

Cut to one week later when my 17 year old 110 returns having been uprated to a 140 and I plug it intoa pair of recently acquired 2nd hand Epos Es14's in my 2nd system. Same CD with a CD63 KIS (sorry!) driving it and she said "Bad production? Bo***cks!" smile

I really don't think they give a monkeys at that outlet. And as a hig profile one, you would expect someone from Linn to get a grip. Mind you, how can you ever make their stuff sound good if you have standard issue Linn soggy speakers on the end??

...and what's with that wooden platform? Did they get the local chippy to knock one up in a couple of hours?

If they really wanted to raise the height of their kit, then I think we all know of one better solution.... might also inject some life into it [anyone know what I'm referring to? wink ].

Amateurs!.... Amateurs in suits!
