Vinyl rip off

Posted by: j8hn on 22 February 2004

Bought the new Lambchop LP at Diverse Vinyl stand at the Bristol HiFi Show £16.90 it's a double. Imagine my chagrin when I checked out a couple of Bristol high street record shops on my way home - Impulse £11.90 and Replay £12.99 a £5 or £4 difference.
Now I've been a good customer at Diverse and I've always assumed that as Vinyl Specialists their prices would be keen. Not so, needless to say I won't be shopping at Diverse ever again. God knows what they add in the way of carriage for their mail order customers - wouldn't be surprised if they were a tenner down on the deal.

Fortunately it's a good album but only a reasonable pressing.

S'pose import duties from Wales must be very high almost 331/3 %

Diverse are one of the most expensive, probably because they are specialists.

Hey Steady on

For those of us with no access to a High Street record shop Diverse provide a pretty good service via Mail Order (major bulk orders notwithsatanding).

I'm pretty sure their heart's in the right place.

So where do you buy your vinly quickie? Is it Acorn in Barstaple?

Yeah P

I call being ripped of to the tune of 30% real service.

Their heart's in the right place all right - their wallets!

Acorn Music,that rings a bell.
If I remember rightly,he deals in mainly Jazz stuff by Mail order only.
I visited his place around 10 or so years ago, came away with a few LP's.
I tend to buy mostly used vinyl these days, but still use Diverse....I've always been delighted with them, despite being a little more expensive than most.

Well P,

Just did a web-browse to compare prices.

Lets take Sister Ray [SR]
Lambchop "AwC'mon" SR £10.90 Diverse £16.90
Air "Talkie Walkie SR £12.99 Diverse £15.90
David Sylvian "Blemish" SR £16.99 Diverse £19.90
Franz Ferdinand SR £10.99 Diverse £13.90
Stereolab "Margerine EC." SR £13.99 Diverse £15.99
Cardigans "Gran Tourismo" SR £15.99 Diverse £19.90

SR carriage £1.95 Diverse carriage £1.50

So at those kind of savings you could afford the trip up to town to Sister Ray in Berwick St and still be quids in and get a day out to boot!

Big Grin there have been many people complaining on this board that vinyl is expensive, esp in comparison to CD. Well no wonder if people buy from specialist mail order. Most of my purchases have been of new vinyl and compared to cd its been quite favourable - its just knowing where to buy. There are a lot of good independent record stores that also do mail order too.

My local shops are usually cheaper, but I've found that Boomkat, Disque, Ninjashop, and Warpmart are all pretty fair. Movemusic has a limited range, but what it does have is dead cheap.
