A general CD technical questions.

Not sure if this is the right forum. I'm sure I'll be set straight if not.
I bought a second hand CD Gracelands, without looking at it first(yes I know).
It won't play well with my CDS2, but it has ripped into iTunes.
Except for track 2 it only rips 1.15mins of a 4 + minute track.
TOC says the right numbers.
So to the questions does the CD scan from in to out or vice versa?
Could anyone guestimate how far from the centre or edge 5:25 minutes into the CD (T1 +1.15) would be , so I can try and see what damage is preventing track 2 from completing?

CDs read from the inside out. They rotate at constant linear velocity (higher spinning speed at the start than the end), so the damage will be further from the centre than the calculation (total data "space" width)*5.25minutes/70minutes will give you. I'd look about 1.5cm to 2cm from the edge of the hole.

I thank you.
I was pretty well convinced my self of the in to out . I had forgotten that the spin speed changes.
I'll check it out tomorrow, but feel it may be too far gone.
I'll report if I have any success.

Sometimes if you hold the CD at the correct angle to the light, you can see the tracks, a little like you can on an LP. That might help you spot the issue.
I'd also try ripping it with iTunes error correction both off and on. Perhaps also try other ripping programs.

I thought I'd spotted the offending scratch but could not reduce it enough to make CD play correctly.
Entertaining to see how different players treat a damaged disc. Cog and itunes very similar up to fault and stop, Quicktime and Real player, stop playing sound but the counter continues and music re-appears after 40 or so seconds.
Seller has agreed to a replacement so no loss.

Couldn't you just lift the laser off of that bit & plonk it down the other side?

Or just put your finger on top of the arm and increase the pressure ... oops, that was for steam age autochanger turntables ...
