Speakers advice...

Just moved to Geneva from London where I had a great listening room (22ft x 15ft). Now I'm faced with renting an appartment with a much smaller room, probably more like 14ft x 10ft.

My setup is CDX / 82 / HiCap / 180 / B&W CM4s (and a Revolver Rebel - bring back memories anybody?!).

Problem is the B&Ws need a lot of breathing space...

Any recommendations of a pair of relatively inexpensive speakers (preferably floor standers) that work well with this kit and will work well in a confined space, close to a rear and potentially side walls... the only thing I've heard that may fit the bill are the Neat Petites (too bass light for a big room, hence I went with the CM4s)

I have a dedicated room of almost identical size and the Vienna Acoustics Bachs work perfectly. They produce a somewhat relaxed sound that meshes perfectly with Naim, IMO.

They can be placed close to side walls (mine are 20" from the tweeter to the side walls) but they need at least 24" from the rear wall (measured from the front of the speaker). The room needs to be damped with rugs or something else but they work great. The Mozarts would also be exceptional. One caveat: the speakers are optimally voiced for classical music.

Huh ? How does this work ?

My statement is subjective. But you no doubt knew that, right?

Every speaker I have ever heard sounds different and some speakers sound better with different types of music. For instance Naim speakers sound excellent with rock music but not so good with orchestral music. Vienna Acoustics speakers sound better with classical music but just don't boogie with rock. A speaker's aural presentation tends to reflect the tastes of the designer and listeners buy speakers that best suit their own tastes and preferences.

Perhaps every speaker you have heard sounds the same?

Both Linn and Naim speakers are meant to be placed up against a wall, no? Inexpensive, floor-standing... how about Linn Keilidhs? Not the last word in detail, but are tuneful and fun to listen to. No longer in production, but have seen lots used.

I see that Neat Acoustics are offering a pair of Keilidhs second hand.

I use Royd Minstrels in a similar size(ish) room on the end of a 180. They are quite sensitive to placement and like being away from the rear wall a bit.
