The XX

A bunch of South London teenagers making great music. The vinyl is particularly well pressed and has one extra track as well. Check out their myspace.

Sweet vocals over a joy division meets vinnie Riley vibe - always a good start IMO!

I heard xx on the Radcliffe and Maconie show on Radio 2, and have added their album to my "I'm going to get all these in 1 go" list on Amazon.

There is some decent new music out at the mo'; The Heavy, Taken by Trees, The Temple Trap for example. They all sound interesting, whereas many of the current faves (Arctic Monkeys Kasabian, The Killers etc)I find as dull as ditchwater.

Each to their own, obviously, but I am pleased that there is some stuff made in this decade which is attracting me.

My favourite album this year.

While it's different to a lot of today's stuff and sounds fresh, as I've said in "what are you listening to...", anyone who likes any of VU and Nico, New Order (and Joy Division), Mazzy Star and more, will find something to like in this album.

I didn't know the vinyl had another track - at least my cd comes in a cool case!

I'd like to say I taught them all they knew - but sadly I only taught them science!

Brilliant.

Does that mean you also taught Hot Chip, Burial, and Four Tet, as I think I read that they all went to the same school?? I'd expect Kieran Hebden was probably an interesting lad to teach!

Certainly taught Kieran for several years - very gifted pupil!

A dum question, but why all the music from this school. Is it a specialism there?

Either way did they skip geography to go learn their chops?

I'm absolutely loving the XX at the moment. I saw the video for Crystalised on MTV2 yesterday which was a nice surprise. Their cover versions of Kyla's 'Do you mind' (first time they used live drums) and Aaliyah's 'Hot like fire' are superb too.

On a side note, the new Taken by Trees album is great too, if completely different. The version of Animal Collective's 'My girls' ('My Boys') is nice as well.

Search YouTube for "The XX Teardrops" for a great cover.

The school is an urban comprehensive which was led by an inspiring head who cultivated a liberal ethos whist not letting go of the idea of academic excellence. A strong commitement to equality of opportunity and a believer in taking the school's agenda to Ofsted and not letting Ofsted dictate the agenda. Sadly following his retirement he was followed by some Heads who just did not understand the pupils or staff. The school is now in special measures.

Another shout for The XX.
I was trying to think who they remind me of but I couldn't pick out one band.

South Londons Glasvegas?

All the same you really need to hear "Shelter".

Thanks for that - great cover. Kind of sounds like Joy Division covering Motown. My favourite Womack + Womack song done brilliantly.
