2nd hand prices
Posted by: andyvk on 27 July 2007
ive just watched a serviced pair of mint cb 135s go on ebay for £870 what is happenening to the 2nd hand prices of our equipment its utter madness. surely these amps are worth much more than that. is this just an absolute bargain or the sign of things to come.

I'm sure you are right. I sold a pair of serviced CB 135's last year on PFM for about 1150. The second hand Naim market undoubtedly supports the new market in some way and therefore a healthy secondhand market is preferable since new prices go up rather than down. I think it needs a concerted effort on the part of sellers to hold out for good prices and not to let items go cheaply. Otherwise it affects the whole secondhand market. I don't think that E Bay is a good price guide.... after all it is an auction and so prices will sometimes be either over the top or well below value. Paul.

Yes it is Andy and yes it could carry on, with downloads and MP3's etc second hand hi-fi prices could struggle,

Have a read of the ad on PFM 151, I believe the sellor had them re-capped but he doesn't say where.

It is surely true that anything is worth what you can get for it. However circumstances may dictate a speedier sale than is ideal. Necessarily this may cause the asking price to be reduced. as I said the other days, there is a wise farming saying: "Better to sell and regret, than not to sell and regret."
By now the Chrome Bumper and Olive series, which are very good, are actually getting quite old. It is hardly a surprise that once very expensive pieces are drifting in value as the aproach ten or twenty years old.
Even my eightenn year old Volvo is not worth very much, but it is still a superb car!
For those with little money this may be regarded as a good way to start on the Naim ladder, before graduating to new Black Box pieces!

even without a service they have to be worth more than this, someone is trying to sell an early cb 250 for £725 on ebay. if the person gets that price for the amp you are in a lottery position with your prized posessions. who nows what anything would be worth after that

I keep an eye on E-Bay every day - sad but true and I can tell you that prices are low at the present time.
For some months now, E-Bay business has been slow. You can see it every day with items going for far less than they did last year. Be thankful if you own Naim equipment because their prices hold up better than almost anything else except vintage Radford, Quad, Leak, Garrard, Thorens, Tannoy and Decca. I see certain items which would have sold in a flash last year, being re-listed, sometimes 3 or 4 times before being sold for a derisory price. If you are buying, it's great. I have bought several CD's and LP's at less than £3 each but if you are selling then times is hard !!!

I think there are 2 reasons:
1. Summertime - aside from convertible top cars, sales tend to slow down in the summer.
2. Naim has been the victim of a lot of scammers on e-bay and people are leery of bidding on anything Linn or Naim. Fewer bidders = lower prices.
But as said above - something is worth what you can get for it!

Chrome Bumper 135s are going to be what 20 years old? I think £850 is a bloody great price for such old hifi.

I agree with garyi, if one is to face reality. How much would an Arcam Delta 70 amp and a pair of Arcam One speakers (also from 1987) fetch today? About £100 if you were very lucky. So around a grand for a Naim amp of the same vintage, which has been superceded by a number of their current range, is pretty good really.

It's called market forces.
If you are buying pre-owned naim at a good price - great; if you are selling pre-owned - too bad - and why are you anyway?
Olive naim has to be the bargain of the century given the price of the new stuff.

Last year I bought a mint pair of CB 135's for £820.
They are 17xxx from 1984, and even though they have been fully serviced & recapped last year (and sound wow), I wouldn't pay much more for them (-> iGary). The shopkeeper still told me that I was lucky to have seen them that early on his website because after I left the shop, he had a series of phone calls from all over Europe. Hee hee.

i've watched used audio prices for years. strange market. it seems to some degree it's a function of how anxious the seller is to unload his gear, but it's also a function of supply and demand. as there is never a lot of naim available, and they are sought after, the prices tend to be some of the highest in the the u.s. market, at least in the new-to-used ratio; perhaps that's a little diff. in the u.k., where the brand is more common. another factor is to what degree the dealers discount new gear. again, w/ naim, as there are no discounts, the used retail is very high. the corollary is that one can also turn around and get the same price for used. this is all probably as it should be, as the result is a stable market. and i agree that the olive stuff is a great bargain, from the pov of the sound you're getting per dollar. for example, an olive hicap can be $7-800, while a blackbox hc goes for 1100 and up - same electrical innards, as far as i know.

Just for clarification.....
I did indeed recap and re-calibrate them.
The interesting thing is that the components used were the same as those used to recap other 250/135s fresh from a factory service and that these were really A1.
I guess I could have lied, not posted an internal pic, or not serviced them at all.
Then I'd have got what - another £300 for shagged amps where the voltage rails had drifted, the bias was out of spec and the internal fan on one amp was kicking in at about 3w dissipation....?
I paid £875 for the pair in this sorry state and the sale has enabled me to buy something which sounds rather nice - so I'm happy and no sour grapes from me towards the chap who bought them and did indeed get a bargain. I hope he gets many years of pleasure from them and at least I know that they are working properly

If you want an investment, buy a pension or savings plan - not an amp

Cheers Jon,
You and David must come over soon to hear the new toys.
I havn't completely left the fold though and still have the Naim tuner - these really are world class and cannot be beat on sound at any cost IMO.
