Mercury music prize
Posted by: manicatel on 10 September 2008
I'm not a fan of awards ceremonies, too self-congratulatory usually.
Anyway, Elbow's "Seldom seen kid" won album the Mercury prize for best album.
I've not heard all the other contenders, though hopefully I will over time.
SSK is easily my pop album of the year (so far), & may in time be considered a classic.
Its also good to see that a prize can go to proper band that have been around for a few years (SSK is their 4th album, I believe), rather than just the new kid on the block or sting/phil collins veteran types.
Any thoughts, or strong recommendations to listen to the other nominees?
Matt.

Burial is my favourite of the 12 shortlisted.

I think 'The Last Shadow Puppets' was my favourite of the shortlisted albums I'd heard or owned. Great indie guitar pop. Elbow is fine but it does plod a bit. I listened to it again this morning after hearing it had won the prize-and I'm still not sure it really flies.
The British Sea Power album is a bit of a blast if you like that sort of thing.

Is it just me who finds the sound of SSK just a bit harsh when played on the hifi? Which is a shame because in other respects it's very good with some terrific songs.

This is Elbow's best work in my opinion.

To mention one of those dreadful people in a post is bad enough, but to put both in the same post is almost unforgivable.

Jamie,
I've got SSK on vinyl, not harsh at all in my system. Haven't heard it on cd.
ROTF.
You are right. Apologies.

Laura Marling should've won; beautiful voice.

Elbow are excellent and are the English Wilco. Discuss.

I thought this years Mercury prize had some strong albums but i think Elbow deserved to win with Seldom Seen Kid, in my opinion just edging the amazing In Rainbows from Radiohead.
