Serious problem with DVD5 - Help needed!

Posted by: Massimo Bertola on 03 February 2009

I've obviously written to the guy who sold it to me, too - it just arrived today, is secondhand but exteriorly excellent.
First, I couldn't get any signal to the display and had to rest the default settings. While in the first state, though (just out of the box) it >heard< a Film DVD and while the screen was black there came the music of the menu.
When I got the DVD5 (default settings restored) to communicate with the projector, the following occurred:

- It only sees music DVDs and when fed a Film it says >region problems< or something, and refuses to play them. But aren't Italy and the UK in the same (2) region?
- It doesn't sees CDs. Or, worse, of the many I fed it it only saw a CD that came with a magazine, and ignored the 2 or 3 ECMs, and other music CDs. It doesn' say >no cd<, >error< or the sort, it simply tries to read it in >play< mode and subsequently goes to stop, mute display. That's it.
Might it be a software/firmaware/code problem, or is it a defective machine and I begin to look for the bridge to jump off?
Thanks for the help.
A rather depressed Max

-did you purchase this from an authorised Naim dealer?

-yes, if its been used in another setup a reset is likely needed.
-Did you do a proper reset? to do this:

(no disc in unit and drawer closed)
-put remote control in DVD mode (press white DVD button once)
-press and hold CLEAR button on remote for 5 seconds, RESET is displayed on front panel
-turn off the power at rear mains switch
-turn on power and try using again

-the region is incorrect, try reset above and check again
-if the player is set to autoplay, does it then play the disc? the display sounds like its in "disp off" mode see manual here:

-see my first answer above, if not I would speak with who-ever you purchased it from.

AV@naim,

thanks for your reply. I still need help, so I answer your inquiries and repeat the problems:

- Yes it was purchased from an authorized dealer I presume (AudioT, Reading, Berkshire - says the label on the box) and I purchased it s/h from the original owner.
- Yes the machine is in autorun, but doesn't read almost any CD.
- When still not reset, out of the box, though still not seeing the video device it read a feature film since I heard the menu music; after the reset, it only sees music DVDs but no feature films, claiming region problems.
- When I checked the software/firmware versions - after the reset - it read >region 0< which sounds strange to me, with all default settings.
- It doesn't read CDs - it has read just two, one burnt and another from a magazine.

Help still needed..

I think I understood the issue - but still I'm far from solving it.
Since I happen to have three films bought in the UK (I still believe in the normality of transnational market), I trued them on the DVD5 and guess what? It reads them Ok.
So it's obvious to me now that something has been done at a software/code plain which has enabled the UK player to see all films, safe for my Italian copies. This demonstrates that not all DVDs are the same even in the same code region, and that region code has influence on CD replaying.
A minor satisfaction of a merely intellectual nature, though, since it still leaves me with a manipulated machine which I'd love to de-manipulate, even though I guess it can't be done in this forum.
Help still needed.

1) Generic note for all brands. All region 2 discs will work in a region 2 set player regardless of country of purchase.

2) Region Coding has no affect at all on CD discs.

Was there any kind of warranty when you purchased it from the owner? If not, it's technically down to you and the seller to come to some agreement if the player is found to be faulty.

I would contact either Steve Hopkins or myself at:

info@naimaudio.com

(Giving the units serial number)

Thanks for the info. Some more trial convinced me that the player is faulty.

That's what I did. Thanks for your support.
