Can UK "get along" with USA

Posted by: JohnMak on 28 March 2003

I have chosen my new Naim system - CDX2/200/202 travel to Singapore second week of April to collect. But I'm going to have to make do with my current speakers for the time being ... finances ... or lack thereof.

Does anyone out there have any experience with Naim and BiPolar speakers. My present ones are Definitive Technology BP2000 towers with 15" powered sub-woofers in each one. I've never been happy with the Sony TA-N 9000ES HT processor and 9000ES amp driving them and I'm hoping the Naim will give more "control".

The not too distant plan (when I sell off the Sony gear and finish my contract in Vietnam) is to upgrade to the Naim AV2 + NAP175's to make a complete HT and Audio system without too much compromise to the music. (XPS for the CDX2 at the same time)
Cheers,

Well, there goes your chance of this year's Nuño Award! Congratulations just the same.

Hi herm,
Don't eliminate me too quickly herm ..... wait until I have enough cash to try replacing my speakers. I'll be back on-line with a passion.

The reason for my many posts is that I pretty much have to buy blind. We have no dealers in Vietnam so I have to be fairly sure of what I want and grab a weekend off to fly to Singapore to audition a very small short list of likely candidates and buy quickly.

My benchmarks are memories of my Linn SARA 9's and later relaced by active Isobariks. I loved that sound but want more "imaging"

So far my wish list runs to SL2's first (but can't afford SIN$15000) then SLB's ... possible but big to ship from the UK secondhand and seem complicated to set up by myself. The Mani 2's appealed because I understand they are an Isobarik loaded design a bit like SARA's. The Linn Ninkas because they are Linn and have good upgrade path to active.

Still haven't had any replies about wether I'm going to be disappointed using my present Bi Polar Definitive Technology BP2000's with Naim gear, but no choice until I get my annual bonus.

Cheers

Whoops, sorry herm. I forgot to say that I did get a couple of responses from the UK with second-hand Mahogany SBL's which I and very interested in. (I don't want Black speakers ... only Mahogany or Cherry) But I'm still waiting from a reply from Vietnamese Customs Dept as to wether they will allow me to import them. That is my most likely priority.

Just a thought - are second hand Yamaha NS1000M's cheap in your part of the world? I traded in a pair some years ago and still miss them. They work brilliantly with Naim amplification.

Hi Nick,
No unfortunately, wrong era. All the Hi Fi gear that's in Vietnam now has come since the beginning of Doi Moi in the early 90's.
E.g. The owner of shop where I go to buy the gear I have (and he does sell a lot of used American High End stuff ARC, Levinson etc) has never in his life seen an LP record. It's quite amazing. This country was literally locked off from the world for 30 years so there are many things, ideas, concepts that the population here are completely unaware of. But they are catching up real fast.

I agree with you by the way about the NS1000's they were a superb speaker and I'm sure they would still sell in truckloads if Yamaha still made them.
