This Is England

If you venture out from your music collection once this year to see a film, go and see This Is England. At a time when the cinemas are full of formulaic drivel, an absolute gem is needed, and this is it. An totally compelling tale of early 80's life, centering on a troubled boy befriended by an amiable skinhead gang of the rough diamond variety. However, the dynamic changes when a member of the gang returns from a spell inside.

Go and see it, little else has torn me away from my music!

Heard the Director on R2 the other week, sounds really good. The soundtrack is supposed to be superb. The Director wanted to give balance that skinheads originally loved black music, bluebeat etc and didn't have a right wing political agenda that was high jacked later. Unfortunately that is so often how skin heads are thought of now adays.

Does anyone remember this advert for the Guardian newspaper? Guardian Skinhead

Hi Alan

Yes it's out now, I saw it last night in an unusually full cinema.

The film portrays the hi jacking of the skinheads by the right wing. Most of the skinheads I was at school with were really nice people, not racist, just following music and a fashion. Not bad music either.

Any film that starts with 54/46 Was My Number by Toots & The Maytals is going to get my vote. Great film, great soundtrack, great young british director Shane Meadows.

If you like the film you should check out Dead Man's Shoes by Shane Meadows.
