My CD5i and Nait 5i just arrived - YEAH!
Posted by: GrizzlyHippo on 23 December 2003
Well, I just got a call from the shop and my CD5i and Nait 5i arrived today, so I'll be picking them up in the morning and setting it all up.
Only problem is that the christmas tree is where the hi-fi rack should be.
Votes please:
a) Get the hi-fi, but wait until christmas is over before setting it up.
b) Set it up partially (in another place) just to get the 'feel' of it and have some fun.
or
c) Ruin everyone's christmas by throwing out the tree tomorrow morning, 1 day before christmas.
Aside from this perplexing situation, I should say a big thanks to Naim for delivering my christmas present bang on time.
I'll post back soon with first impressions.
Tom.

The answer is simple...you have to throw out the christmas tree and set the gear up. The christmas lights will steal valuable current from the amp and that just wont do.

Hi Tom
Great Christmas present. Look forward to your appraisal.
I know the kit is great and will sound great. Naim are presumably still supplying a DIN to DIN interconnect with the player?
You also have the option to use the RCA sockets. If you have some decent RCA leads to try, I'd be interested in a comparison.
As an aside; you may find that a crappy transformer for the Xmas tree lights will screw up the sound.
Enjoy the break; whatever.

You have far more self disipline than I. I would never be able to let it sit there until after the festivities.
Got to agree here....
If you can't get the tree out the way, then at least plug it in and get it breaking in. You can later move it to its proper place.

michael

At the very least plug them in and warm them up somewhere whilst you enjoy christmas.
If you are like me with new toys, your intentions will be good, then you will get pissed and just have to play, setting it all up oout of phase etc.

I agreee with anyone who says "Get Rid Of The Tree".
Don't waiste your entire Christmas holiday break waiting to hear the Naim equipment. It is bound to be impressive so get on with it !
Merry Christmas

Burn the tree - christmas sucks - bah humbug!
Music is far more important than some stupid twinkly lights on a fire risk space waster

What happens next Christmas, are you going to have to move the kit for next years tree?
Posted on: 28 December 2003 by GrizzlyHippo
Next Christmas is simple.
Change religion, tell our (then) 1 and a half year old boy that Santa doesn't exist... or alternatively just re-position the tree somewhere else.
Anyway, I celebrated christmas with the tree in it's original position and our 5 month old son had a great christmas. The hi-fi didn't quite make it to my house on christmas eve (long story), so I'll (hopefully) be setting it up tomorrow and will post feedback from myself and some other Naim nuts that I know (armered, you know you're one) once it has warmed up and all.
Quick question though... Now that I have upgraded from my Rotel system to this Naim offering, am I now in the realms of "Hi-Fi" or is this still a "Stereo"???
More soon,
Tom

Tom,
Have you slung the tree out yet?
I'm considering a CD5i so I'm itching to hear your thoughts on the new kit. I don't believe my dealer has them in yet.
George.

GML,
Just took delivery of mine yesterday, so can't comment too much about the CD5i as it must be far from run in.
Out of the box, it sounded about on par with my Pioneer DVD player, i.e. pretty crap.
An overnight session on repeat has improved things dramatically, it's now outperforming my old Teac VRDS-7, which was a lot better than most Naimees would like to admit to.
Having nothing else really to compare to, can't say much more. I hope to get a comparison with a CDX2 tomorrow.

OK, first impressions are that:
1 - It looks awesome, but it IS Naim!
2 - Sound is leaps better than my previous Rotel system. Much more detail.
3 - Cannot really comment on the overall sound quality yet as it is still warming up and running in. When we first switched it on it sounded very cold and I wondered what I had bought, but within 20 minutes it sounded much better (fuller and a bit warmer) and has continued to get noticably better ever since. I'm told the biggest difference will be heard within the first 2-3 days, so I'll post back later.
Overall, very pleased with my new toys.
Tom.
