NAC-82 Improvements

Posted by: NAIM-Collector on 23 November 2002

I am interested in buying a fine used NAC-82.

Is there a list available of the factory modification since the introduction in 1992.

Are there any version worth avoiding.

Since its introduction the 82 has had upgrades to the logic, leds and pots boards. Like other Naim improvements, these can be fitted to older 82s. Remember Naim recommends recapping at 8 to 10 years so, if its around that sort of age, you may want to consider doing that at the same time. 82s from I think late 1999 are latest spec and would represent best value as to do up an original 82 would cost £400 to £500 and is obviously not cost-effective. Having said that, I have been told that a basic un-upgraded 82 outguns a latest spec 102. You will find that the 82 is something special. If you e-mail Naim with S/N they can tell you which spec your 82 is and what could be done to it.

I received the following reply from Naim at one point earlier this year when I was considering buying an 8 year old 82.

"The Nac 82 has had a few minor changes, but the only one that makes any significant difference is changing the Pot board, which costs about £150.00 inc vat.
As with most our equipment we always try to make any improvements retrofittable."

Is there a way to tell that it's really time to do recap besides age. If the amp isnt turn on 24 hours a day (say maybe 2 days per week), wouldn't that extends the timeline of recap?

This was discussed previously in the 12 Year Old 135's--Recap or Not? thread.

Dear sir,

It is essential that these NAP 135 amplifiers are serviced. It is an age thing that determines the performance/operation of certain components, not the amount of usage they have had over a particular period of time.

Hope that puts that one to bed?

Mark @ Naim Service.

You should be leaving your equipment on all the time anyway. It takes a few days to warm up and you will not be getting the best performance otherwise.

All electrical items benefit from being left on constantly. Its the turning on and off that causes electrical items lives to shorten.

I would say using the Naim Amps only twice a week will shorten the length of time to the need for re-capping.

Steve,
was the service worthwhile, as I've also got an 82 of similar age, and have been considering getting Naim to give it a once over.

Cheers

During the last few months, I have had a Hicap, NAP 250 and a 32.5 serviced by Naim and yes it is worthwhile.

Everything is clearer and much better etc.

All of my kit is either less and 18 months old or has been recently serviced and it all sound great.

A service is a very cost effective upgrade due to the significant improvement in the quality of sound for a relatively small amount of money.
