Richie Havens - anyone a fan?
Posted by: Stephen Bennett on 22 October 2002
A lot of the people I admire admire Richie Havens. I've never heard any of his stuff - but I love his voice when I have heard him sing other peoples stuff.
Very Remiss
Anyone suggest some starters?
Regards
Stephen

"wishing well" just out 2002. This is his best album for years.

Try "Live at the cellar door". Unfortunately alot of his early albums haven't made it to CD. " Richard P. Havens 1983" and a live double are worth searching out on LP.

Greatest Hits
by Ritchie Valens
(Audio Fidelity AFZ 008)
Greatest Hits will feature 16 of Ritchie Valens best known songs including "La Bamba", "Donna", "Come On Let's Go" and "Ooh, My Head". Unlike the previously mentioned Audio Fidelity SACDs (which are all Stereo SACDs), this one will feature mono sound on all of the tracks.
Steve Hoffman comments: "When Ritchie died in the February 1959 plane crash that also killed The Big Bopper and Buddy Holly, the world mourned. Such great talents gone forever. Well, Ritchie on SACD is going to reproduce the warm sound of Ritchie's original master tapes to perfection. Wait and see!"
Track Listing
1. La Bamba
2. Come On, Let's Go
3. Donna
4. Bluebirds Over The Mountain
5. In A Turkish Town
6. That's My Little Suzie
7. Cry Cry Cry
8. Stay Beside Me
9. Dooby Dooby Wah
10. Little Girl
11. Hurry Up
12. Bony Moronie
13. We Belong Together
14. Ooh! My Head
15. Fast Freight
16. Framed
17. That's My Little Suzie (Gold Star alternate take 2)
18. In A Turkish Town (Bob Keane Studio Take 14)

Stephen,
I'm not sure on the release date of the hybrid Richie Havens SACD/CD discussed above.
The first four Audio Fidelity releases are scheduled for the first week in November. But I have no idea who will eventually carry their titles, either in the US or in the UK. It looks like Elusive Disc, Inc. in the US will be one outlet.
Given the work that was done at DCC, its worth the trouble to find a copy at some stage. Currently, they are taking advance orders with Visa/Mastercard (will not be charged until items ship). The web site is still in development, but I have included the contact information below.

I do hate it when people rip off brand names. This new Audio Fidelity looks like it has nothing at all to do with the label of the same name from the 50s-60s.
Audio Fidelity actually pressed the first stereo album in 1958, and produced some of the finest sounding vinyl I have heard. I’m a fan of that labels cheesier moments (there are many), their ‘Percussive Jazz - Doctored for super stereo’ series is amazing in every sense of the word; I have three so far, but obviously need more…
Here are two real AF records: Percussive Jazz vol 1 and Mallet Magic.

Stephen,
Thanks for pointing out my mistake! Overly eager to see these new releases or just going out of my head more likely. Sorry to cross threads like that.
Tony,
I can't speak for the company or really explain the connection you make in your post. But my first impression is that "Audio Fidelity" is a pretty common, and I think they could have found a better name. Thanks for the pictures - Love those covers!

Richie Havens - The End of The Begining -decent album and I feel his cover of Morrison's Wild Night is better than the original.
Havens used to own a place over by Delhi, New York (upstate) Quite close to my hometown. He may still, I haven't been there in a while. Used to be able to catch him in nice , small venues, bars, the local colleges, etc. Plays a Guild guitar alot and has some interesting reasons why. Don't know right off if the above album is around on CD.
