AV2 discrete power R/C codes

Posted by: Marc Evans on 14 November 2003

I'm trying to set up a pronto for my new AV2 - it would be really useful to have power on and off specified as discrete codes rather than the toggle arrangement the naim handset uses.

Can anyone tell me if this is possible? My plan B is to switch to an unused input for my power off state but I'd rather do it properly!

Ta,

Marc.

Hi Marc,

I'm in the exact same position as yourself with my new AV2. With my previous Yamaha DSP800, I could have a Macro setup that would turn down my TV volume, turn on my DVD player, turn on the Yamaha and then select the DVD input.

Now, with my (marginly more expensive Wink AV2, due to the way they have set the power on / off RC5 commands, I cannot get my Pronto to turn on or off the AV2.

The issue seems to be that the AV2 is expecting you to hold down the power button for about 3 seconds before it will obey the command, I don't for the life of me understand why this is thought to be of any use. So, basically anyone with a learning remote of any kind will be unable to integrate a Naim AV2 into any home cinema setup / automation system etc. as their remote will be unable to be programmed with the required macros. This does seem to be a foresight on Naim's befalf here.

I don't know of any other high end processor / or component that would be integrated into a home cinema system that requires this. Most of these types of devices are sold understanding that the vast majority of customers will use the provided remote once or twice (to program their learning remotes with) and then it will live in a drawer somewhere.

The best thing would be for Naim to change the software to simply pick up the power button being pressed and do away with the delay altogether.

Cheers,
Roy.

(I can send you a copy of my Pronto .ccf if you'd like)

There are no discrete on/off command for the AV2.
Yes, you need to press the key for 2-3 seconds to power the AV2 On/Off. I have found this delay can be shorten to about 1 second if the command is the last one in a macro.
For TSU3000/RU950 users be sure to download the last firmware software, previous versions are problematic with AV2 volume control.

Guys,

Thanks for the responses. At least I know where I stand now. It seems like the remote was pretty much the last thing Naim considered when putting the AV2 together - but then again there is that mysterious RS232 port around the back so perhaps they figured that in a real custom install it would be controlled via that.

When it comes down to it though I'd rather spend the money on the AV2 than the Crestron! (in fact I think this controller would cost more than the rest of my kit combined...)

Roy, I've got a first generation pronto TSU1000. If your CCF is compatible with that a copy would be great - I've PM'd you an email address.

A working code for AV2 power on/off, without delay; your remote should be oriented toward the AV2 for 2 seconds, but you can just press the key. It works on 3000/950, not tested on 1000.
The hex code is "5000 0000 0000 0001 001B 000C"
assuming your Av2 is set at the default remote code.

Emmanuel,

That's strange as my learned version of the code has come out like:

5000 0073 0000 0001 001b 000c

One thing I would be curious to know is that if you set the AV2 up to use RC5 commands via the rear RS232 port, then does the code need to be sent for 2 seconds to power the unit on, or does it only need to be sent the once via the RS232 port ?

Roy,
That's OK with 73, i think this is just fill in, the important codes are 5000: meanning RC5 type command, 001b (table code) and 000c (command). For all other commands, only the 0C change.
You just have to send the command once in the RS232 port, command codes are not the same as RC5 ones and on/standby are separated.
