Is this all there is to it?

Just had a keen electrical contracter round to advise on installing a mains spur for the Naim kit. He recommends running a seperate cable (fused on its own at the connection box) with one switched MK socket at the end for the hifi.
Is this all having a seperate mains spur entails?? I had visions of a complicated electrical insatllation?!

It is the most I would do [if there was a problem with the existing ring main I was using], but others may suggest that a completely separate consumer unit feeding off the metter is the thing. You "Pays your money and takes your choice," on this I think!

Keleigh -

Threads on electric supplies usually end up in the Rubber Room (Padded Cell).

Here's a recent/present one in which spurs are touched on (you can also try typing 'separate spur' into the 'find' facility, which I am sure will bring up lots).

Thanks Munch,

What actually is a seperate mains spur then? Wouldn't this solution remove the ring main from the equation?

Have a look at the thread James highlighted. That will tell you and your electrician all you need to know.

Keleigh,

A mains spur is as as your electrician said, a seperate cable fused on its own at the 'consumer unit' as opposed to 'connection box' as you put it. This is an improvement compared to just plugging your system into an existing ring main. However, a further improvement is made if you add another consumer unit direct from the meter and use it solely to power your hifi system. I'm sure your electrical contractor would be able to fit either of the above configurations for a reasonable cost.

Hope this helps.

Me too. I used to have a separate 40 amp feed off the household fuse box. I could still 'hear' the PC when it was plugged into the ring main.

Not so with a separate consumer unit. I posted photos and details of my installation here recently.

Good luck.

John.

PS. Threads of this nature are normally moved to 'The Padded Cell'.

John,

“I could still 'hear' the PC when it was plugged into the ring main... Not so with a separate consumer unit.”

It’s one of my Biggest Magics I used to demonstrate to various audiences that switching on PC is allways audible. The point is that unlike common mortals, I got TWO SEPARATE MAINS METER, one for audio, the other for the household, meaning the highest step in separation - if all the “-” wires were not be connected to “Earth” as standard. Separation can be increased/improved but it won’t be complete.

I don’t continue this topic because Adam would direct me to 'The Padded Cell'. So - just some food for thought.
