Taken from the Tele:
"Legendary rockers Queen are to play the Odyssey Arena this spring as the band returns to the road for the first time in almost 20 years, the Belfast Telegraph can reveal.
Former Free and Bad Company singer Paul Rodgers will step into the shoes of charismatic frontman Freddie Mercury, who died from Aids in November 1991."
Roll on 13 May!!

I caught a re-run of Queen at the Live-Aid concert on PBS last night. Freddy was one of a kind. I think I would rather see a tribute band than Paul Rodgers and Co

I must admit my feeling is that Brian May and especially Roger Taylor ought to retire gracefully.
Taylors voice has totally gone and his performance at the Buckingham Palace celebrations was a complete embarassment.
Sometimes it is better to live on memories.
I would be surprised if John Deacon is performing, he said never again.

Mick

I'm seeing the Queen on tour in Windsor on April 8th - should be a good gig.
Don't know about the support act Chaz & Cammi though.

If, as I infer from Brad's post, "Queen" are playing on 13 May, roll on 14 May!
But, come on, this version has to be better than the original. As was clear from his days in Free and Bad Company, at least Paul Rodgers can sing. Something of which one could never accuse that nancy boy who used to front Queen.

I'm fairly certain he isn't. I know that Glen Hughes - ex-Trapeze mainman and former Deep Purple bassist/vocalist - was asked but he turned it down, although I'm not sure who else they've approached.

Queen without Freddie Mercury and John Deacon just is not Queen.
Far better to call it the May and Taylor concert, but Queen it ain't.
Freddies voice was distinctice and George Michael was the only "star" who gave a decent or comparable performance to Freddie at the FM tribute.
Queen were four special men and with two of them gone, it is time to call it quits.

I think it is more of a case of have you seen the light and become a capitalist.
I believe you voted for Tony Blair, so you are 75% there.
Queen were once my favourite pop group. I have nearly all of their LP's etc etc. I just think that two out of four is not Queen.

From what I recall, when George Michael sang at the Freddie Mercury tribute concert, he had to have the music transposed down a tone or two so that he could sing in his vocal register. Then he did an OK job - but he is no FM.
I guess I am interested in the concert on the basis of hearing some Queen ( and Free ) music live and I am willing to accept that there will be some compromises in the line up.
Thinking about it, how many bands over the years have retained their original line up? Lots of bands have changed their members yet the fans stay loyal - why shouldn't Queen be allowed to do the same?

I was fortunate enough to go to a Gibson Guitar night at Earls Court (I think) many years ago. Apart from trotting out loads of top guitarists; Slash amongst them, we had a rumour that Jimmy Page was in the building and fully expected a Page/Plant set. Paul Rodgers did a set with his band and when it was sure that Pagey wasn't going to play, he was left with the whole second half. We had Simon Kirke on drums and he launced into a Free set. To top it all, he introduced on stage Andy Fraser who strolled on to play a few more Free numbers. It was a long time ago and I can't remember who the guitarist was. Slash I think. Anyone else there with a better memory than mine?
I am a HUGE Free fan and I thought I had died and gone to heaven! They were f**king amazing. Paul Rodgers hasn't lost anything.
It was that night that I picked up a pair of IBL's after the gig in North London, so that puts it early 90's sometime.

Anyone who hears Free on the radio these days only usually gets to hear 'Alright Now' so you could easily be mislead into thinking they were a 'one-track' band!
I've got their album 'Fire & Water' however and it is amazing.

Jon

Now that is a good band.
Of course I had to quote totally out of context but why not invite Geddy Lee to do both the vocals and the bass playing

I have always rated Paul Rodgers ever since I first heard "Little Bit of Love" on the radio in about 1972.
His voice still blows me away and he's in my top 5 favourite male vocalists.
Now I've never been a massive Queen fan but the odd song is great and I thought they were the best band at Live Aid, largely due to Freddie Mercury's performance.
But I just can't put these two together. Can you imagine Paul Rodgers singing "Radio Ga Ga" or "Bohemian Rhapsody"? I can only think of a handful of original Queen songs that might be passable (but only just passable).
None of them, especially Brian May and Roger Taylor, needs the money. They should leave the memories and performance of their former bands unchanged and not pull a stunt that undermines all that made them great in the first place.

I couldn't watch Paul Rodgers do this to himself. I don't know what he's thinking of.

I don't really know why they are calling it a Queen concert cos it isn't really is it?. However why shouldn't Brian, Roger and Paul R go on tour together. Clearly they don't need the money it's nothing to do with that. Also bear in mind that Brian and Roger have been making music for the past decade they haven't just had their feet up.
Paul Rodgers was/(is ?) a great vocalist but he would struggle with some of the Queen stuff, however they aint stupid and I'm sure they will pick the material that does work. PR has a much blueseyer voice than Freddie so I suspect the material will be that way inclined. I'd be very suprised if a few Free numbers weren't thrown into the set which makes them calling it a Queen concert even stranger to me.
Anyone going along shoudn't expect a Queen concert. I haven't got tickets but if I get a chance I might risk it as a fan of both bands.

Rasher.
Paul Rodgers has been friends with Brian and Roger for many years. it must be somewhat of a challenge for him, I don't thing he will ever have been on an arena sized tour before, so I hope he can cope with the Arena/Audience etc. Come on you can't deny him an oppurtunity like this!
Posted on: 14 March 2005 by Rasher
Well, he did play the Isle of Wight festival with Free at the age of about 22, so I think that would have tested him more, personally.
